For many reasons, this will be a defining season for Milan and most importantly for Allegri. Severely handicapped for much of the last season, Milan seemed destined for the worst before a late revival saw them come third in the league. They had to wait till the very last match-day to gain entry into Europe, as the journey saw them conquer many demons ai??i?? both outside the team and within. After finally spending money on a player who was not on a loan list, Milan saw a drastic change in their fortunes in the second half of the season.
In hindsight, it would have served Milan better if they did not finish within the Champions League spots in the league. Milan would have been freed from the added pressure of performing in Europe and they could have finally focused on rebuilding the squad. This could also be Allegriai??i??s last season at Milan after his much publicized fallout with the President on many occasions last season. Berlusconiai??i??s very public disapproval of Allegri did hurt him very badly; however, being the gentleman he is, Allegri did not speak out against him.
Continuing their trend of buying young players, Milan brought in a few players during this transfer window. Saponara, 21 and Poli, 23
Two of the most important players who left Milan are Ambrosini and Flamini. While the former moved to Fiorentina, Flamini could not reach an agreement with Milan and his contract was not renewed. Spending most of the time injured on bench, Flamini did find the back of the net on few occasions during the last few games in the season. Bojan returned to Barcelona after his loan spell expired last season. Although Milan did try to buy him, Barcelona did not go below their asking price, and consequently, he was shipped off to Ajax for more first-team action. Milan did not use Bojan much last season and hence his departure will not affect the team majorly.
Taiwoai??i??s ordeal with Milan finally came to an end after the former Marseille man was sold to the Turkish club, Bursapor. After finding his time limited at Milan, he was loaned last season and subsequently after failing to find a place in the first team, was rightly sold. Another similar instance is that of Didac Vila. The Spanish defender did not find any action with Milan and spent all his time mostly on loan. If these players were brought in to strengthen the defence, why were they sent away? And, more importantly, if these players were not required by Milan presently, why were they bought in the first place? This brings into question the most recent acquisition of Silvestre from cross-city rivals, Inter.
Silvestre could not even find his way to the first team at Inter last season and although his cause was hampered by the fact that he was injured twice over the course of the season, he is not the defender he once was with Catania and Palermo. Milan got one part of the deal correct ai??i?? Silvestre was brought in on loan and not as an outright buy. Should he bomb once more, it would conclusively prove his ineffectiveness in Serie A. Milan have indeed given him a second chance to perform at the highest level and now it all depends on the player to grab the chances coming his way.
Milanai??i??s defence line is wearing a very thin look at this time, with Bonera out till October end due to injury. The defensive players at Milan presently are – De Sciglio, Mexes, Zapata, Abate, Constant, Bonera, Silvestre, Vergara, Antonini and Zaccardo. If we only consider the centre-back positions, other than Mexes and Zapata, no one else inspires any confidence. The backup for Mexes and Zapata are Silvestre, Vergara and Zaccardo ai??i?? and none of them has played for Milan for any considerable length of time. A frightening thought, indeed! With still more than two weeks to go till the transfer window closes, Milan should look for more cover on that front other than in the offensive half. Should any of the centre-backs become injured anytime during the season, Milan will have a tough time looking for a replacement.
From conceding the least number of goals two seasons back to the present defensive line-up, Milan have come a long way. The days of Nesta and Silva are long gone and the present defensive players have a very long way to go before they can even think of even filling their huge shoes.
