TheHardTackle takes a look at one of Liverpool FC striker Iago Aspas, and examines whether it was a wrong decision to sign him up.
Despite making some quality defensive signings, Liverpool FC have taken a huge gamble by shelling out a decent sum of money for an inexperienced player.
A lot was expected of Iago Aspas Juncal when Liverpool signed him in the region of 8 million pounds from Celta Vigo. He was supposed to lead the line for Liverpool with uncertainty surrounding Luis Suarez`s future and Sturridge`s injury during the early part of the season. After a string of good performances against Melbourne FC, Preston and Olympiakos in pre season, one would have expected Aspas to feature consistently for the reds this season given his movement, work-rate and a tenacious attitude.
Aspas has featured in six of Liverpoolai??i??s ten Premier League games so far, and has struggled to impose himself. After a fairly lively first-half display on the opening day against Stoke, in which he set up Daniel Sturridge for the only goal of the game, Aspas has remained anonymous throughout all the matches he has featured for Liverpool.Ai?? It seems he has never really got to grips with the `pace` and physical nature of the premiership unlike the La Liga where more emphasis is laid on the technical side of the game rather than the physical nature of it. Having said that, one might have expected Aspas to be decent with the ball, but his touch has been abysmal and he couldnai??i??t string some passes together and contribute to the attacking front.
The game against Manchester United at Anfield was the perfect springboard for Aspas to launch his Liverpool career and impress the Kop but it was always going to be a tough game to be thrown into for a new player trying to establish himself. Unfortunately, it proved exactly the same for Aspas who hardly got time on the ball. He never got to grips with the pace and pressure of the game, and was replaced in the second half. While it was understandable that he couldn’t adjust to the pace and physical nature of the premiership, the work rate and tenacious attitude just doesnai??i??t appear to exist in his game play at the moment. This has been the case in every one of his outings for the club so far, which is a worrying pattern considering he was known for his passion and never-say-die attitude at Celta where he was instrumental in helping them stay in the La Liga(Aspas scored 11 goals and made 5 assists). Perhaps Aspas has never really settled down at Merseyside owing to the climatic/cultural changes. Physically he is inferior to the burgeoning Jordan Ibe and Raheem Sterling. If Aspas doesn’t bulk up he is going to find life very tough in the premiership and be deemed as `light-weight`.
After Michu`s success at Swansea last season, there is a growing misconception among the football fraternity that a star player at one of the lesser La Liga clubs will go on to be a roaring success in the premier league. One mustn’t forget that his transfer to Swansea was met by utter shock in Spain, no one understood none of Spain’s top 6 clubs hadn’tAi??picked up Michu,Ai??before Swansea secured his signing at a bargain. The reaction after the Michu transfer reflectsAi??just how highly rated he was in Spain at the timeAi??and, while Iago Aspas was certainly admired as Celta Vigoai??i??s best player last season, there wasnai??i??t the same reputation Ai??or buzz building up around him as had been the case withAi??his compatriot and ex Celta colleague.
This doesnai??i??t mean that Aspas isnai??i??t a good player, but ratherAi??to suggest that he perhaps isnai??i??t an exceptionally talented player in the Gerrard/Coutinho mould. Aspas` 12 goals in La Liga last season was a decent tally for a player running out for a club battlingAi?? at the bottom of the table, but itai??i??s worth mentioning that Michu managed to perform even better when he wasnai??i??t even playing as an out and out centre-forward at Swansea last season.
The chances of him single-handedly mounting Liverpool`s challenge to get into the top four is highly unlikely, so to criticise him for not being up to the standard of Gerrard or Suarez is a bit harsh on him. It is also worth keeping in mind that Aspas is entering the prime of his career as a footballer, the chances of him getting much better is pretty less, unless he is a late bloomer like Rickie Lambert. With only one season in the Spanish top flight, Aspas is relatively inexperienced when it comes to playing top level football.
If you analyze Aspas` career as a whole, he hasnai??i??t exactly been a prolific goalscorer in his career. The only stand-out season that Aspas has had in terms of scoring, was in the 2011/12 season in the Spanish second division, netting 23 goals. There is a sea of difference between the Spanish segunda and the English top flight and it would be wrong to expect Aspas to replicate his performances the season before last.
Can Rodgers use Aspas?
With the ever-blossoming SAS partnership reaching a very high level, it is almost impossible for Aspas to to get a chance in the first eleven. Over the course of the season he has the quality to be an effective supporting player when called upon, particularly if he finds his best form. Aspas may also be suffering because of his price tag, and it might take a while for him to come back to his best form. The comparisons with Michu arenai??i??t helping either and if Aspas can overcome all these mental blocks, he can become a useful utility player.
It can be noted that Aspas had his best season in the Segunda Ai??with Celta when he was operating as the wide striker and not the role of a typical number 9. With Rodgers` current 3-4-1-2 formation, it might seem difficult for Aspas to get back into the scheme of things especially with the form and partnership that the SAS combination is exhibiting. He has shown that he canai??i??t play in a slightly deeper role behind the front two, so that also rules him out of replacing/ challenging Coutinho or Moses in that role.
Aspas is sidelined with a thigh injury and his current plight is reminiscent of the horrendous time that Fabio Borini had last season. Most of the fans and pundits do not see a future for Aspas at Liverpool and one wonai??i??t be surprised if he returns to the La Liga in January.
