They say goalkeepers may not win you matches, but they can surely save them for you. We take a look back at the season, where the fans have witnessed some world class goalkeeping from young and upcoming custodians around Europe. Samir Handanovic ( Inter ) ai??i?? 115 saves, 9 clean sheets
Handanovic, who joined Inter at the start of the 2012-13 season from Udinese, has made 115 saves in the league this season. With a vulnerable and unsettled defence in front of him, Handanovic hasnai??i??t received the protection he has deserved. But his brilliant performances havenai??i??t gone unnoticed as reportedly Barcelona are interested in signing him, in addition to a few other European clubs. Retaining him will provide Inter with a strong base to re-build their defence for the next season.
Thibaut Courtois ( Atletico Madrid ) ai??i?? 81 Saves, 20 clean sheets
The Belgium international has come up with some crucial performances throughout the season, and more so during the recently concluded Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid. Courtois made numerous world class saves as Atletico won the cup for the first time since 1995-96 season. His fantastic form has meant that Chelsea are now seriously considering to make him a part of the first team squad next season, with Petr Cech now 31 years of age. Although the Czech international is sure to remain as the first choice at the London club for one or two more seasons at least, Chelsea have surely found an able replacement in Courtois.
The Belgium international is not too keen to return to his parent club immediately though, he has stated his desire to remain at the Spanish club for one more season as he looks to gain invaluable first team experience. With Atletico Madrid finishing third in the league, fans across the world will be able to catch a glimpse of this exciting talent in the next seasonai??i??s Champions League as well.
Ron-Robert Zieler ( Hannover 96 ) ai??i?? 146 Saves, 8 clean sheets
The 24-year-old has been outstanding this season and although stats can often mislead you at times, but 146 saves in 34 games is awe-inspiring. Hannover had the third worst defence in the league, conceding 62 goals in 34 matches, but had it not been for Zieler that figure could have touched 100. In fact, Zieler was perhaps the reason why the German club finished in the top half of the table (9th) instead of facing a relegation battle.
Zieler was at Manchester United during the early part of his career, and although he didnai??i??t make any first team appearance for them, has made two appearances for the German national team so far. If he is able to maintain this level of performance next season as well, he will surely run into contention for a place in the World Cup squad. Manchester United might have made a big mistake in letting go of this wonderfully talented goalkeeper. Unitedai??i??s rival Liverpool have been linked with him, as they search for a replacement for Pepe Reine, who is expected to leave the club this season. It will be hard for Hannover to retain their prized asset in the summer, if the English club does make an official bid.
David de Gea ( Manchester United ) 84 Saves, 11 Clean sheets
When Manchester United signed David de Gea from Atletico Madrid back in 2011, it was the British record transfer fee for a goalkeeper. So the Spaniard had to shoulder the burden of huge expectations, and he faltered under pressure. His first season was patchy to say the least. The fact that the British media highlighted every mistake of his didnai??i??t help the cause.
But this season, the 22 year old has silenced all his critics. He has finally shown why United paid that vast amount of money to secure his service. His shot stopping has been world class, and although he still needs to improve on how he commands the box and the way in which he deals with crosses, David de Gea has proved that he is ready to grab the No.1 jersey at Old Trafford permanently. It seems United have finally found the man who can replace Edwin Van der Sar. Even the former Dutch international was full of his praise recently, he said ai??i??
‘The first half of the season, and the year before, there were some mixed feelings and the gaffer changed it up a little bit to play Anders Lindegaard for three or four games.
‘But then David came back in and we stuck with him.
‘From that point, his performances grew and he became more important to the team all the time.
‘It has been a good turnaround for him in terms of his performances and his own self-confidence in being the Manchester United goalkeeper.’
David de Geaai??i??s performance was rewarded as he not only won the league title with United, in what turned out to be Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s last outing for the club, the Spaniard was also selected in the PFA team of the year.
Asmir Begovic ( Stoke City ) 110 Saves, 12 Clean Sheets
Signing Begovic for a mere fee of A?3.25Ai??million from Portsmouth back in 2010 has turned out to be a bargain deal for Stoke. The 25-year-old has brought calmness and stability to the defence. He is a brilliant shot stopper and commands his box pretty well. His has churned out one world class performances after other and it is perhaps only a matter of time before he joins a bigger club. In fact Liverpool have been linked with the Bosnian International and worryingly for Stoke fans, his recent interview suggested that he might leave if the right opportunity arises.
Many consider him to be unlucky to have missed out on the PFA team of the year, where David de Gea was selected ahead of him, and it is of no doubt that he is perhaps one of the most underrated footballers in the Premier League at the moment.
