Everton FC have officially announced the appointment of Roberto Martinez as the new manager of the Merseyside club.

The 39-year-old Spaniard joins from Wigan Athletic and has signed a four-year contract at Goodison Park.

Roberto Martinez comes in with an ever expanding reputation, but he will have big boots to fill. He replaces a man who was at the helm of the club for 11 years and under him Everton have always managed to punch above their weight in the league. Despite limited budget and squad Moyes has always managed to get the best out of his players. It will be interesting to see how backing Roberto Martinez gets from the board in the transfer market, but his immediate job will be to retain the key players, like Baines and Fellaini, in the squad.
Martinez started his managerial career at Swansea back in 2007. The 39-year-old is often credited with changing Swanseaai??i??s style of play, something which his successors, Paulo Sousa, Brendan Rodgers and now Michael Laudrup, have inherited. But Martinez made his name during his four year spell at Wigan.
The 39-year-old slowly but surely embedded his footballing philosophy of playing an attacking and attractive game at Wigan. He managed to keep Wigan in the Premier League, despite the fact that they were considered to be the favourites to go down in almost every season, till last season ai??i?? with his team customarily putting up brilliant displays towards they fag end of the seasons and pulling themselves out of the relegation zone, till the last season. But this season, they left it too late and were relegated well before the league ended.
Everton fans can expect more attacking football under Roberto Martinez, although it must be said that his sides have always looked vulnerable defensively. The Spaniard will do well to retain the steel and stability at the back that David Moyes installed at the club, and then add his attacking philosophy up front.
Wigan Chairman Dave Whelan has already confirmed that they club will not stop Roberto Martinez from raiding his former club in the transfer market. Reports suggest that Roberto Martinez is keen on signing James McCarthy and highly rated Wigan winger Callum McManaman from his former club.
“If Everton want to sign any of our players for the right amount of money we will consider it. There is no agreement [preventing Martinez returning for Wigan players]. It is unfair and I don’t believe in anything like that.
“It is normally the case certain players want to play in the Premier League and I can’t blame them for that. Players sign contracts but sometimes one or two want to leave and it is difficult to stop them. Players are players and I believe in freedom in football. This is a big step forward for Roberto Martinez personally. It will be interesting to see how he copes with the changes in expectations ai??i?? managing a club expected to beat the relegation is different from managing a club expected to fight for European qualification.
