Daniel Sturridge began his senior career with Manchester City and has since played for two more big names in English football, Chelsea and Liverpool. With the ability to play both as a central striker and as a wide attacker, Sturridge is becoming one of the top footballers in England at the moment, and looks set to travel with the national team to Brazil come June. At just 24 years of age, Sturridge already has one Premier League, two FA Cup and one Champions League medals. THT editor Aditya Balaram had a chat with Sturridge regarding his preferred position, Liverpool’s start to the season and more.
1. You seem to have been reborn after moving to Liverpool in January of last season and the goals are coming most freely. What has been the key factor in helping you rediscover your goal scoring?
Sturridge: Yeah I have really enjoyed moving to Liverpool. The city is great and I have really settled in at the club. I have fortunately been given the opportunities by the manager to show what I can do. I have just enjoyed getting out there and playing football.
2. By moving from Chelsea to Liverpool, you have had to give up on European football for at least a season or two. Do you have any regrets about that?
Sturridge: No not at all. Iai??i??ve already won the Champions League with Chelsea! Iai??i??m now ready to embark on a new journey with Liverpool. We have had a great start to the season, it is still early with plenty of games to go, but we are doing well and we will hopefully continue to do so.
3. At Chelsea you were primarily deployed in a wide role, whereas Brendan Rodgers now positions you in a more central role. How important has this been in terms of your performance?
Sturridge: For me, Iai??i??m happy to play in any position that I get asked to play in. I canai??i??t change my mentality if I get played in a different position, Iai??i??ve just got to carry on doing what I do, whether Iai??i??m playing in a central position or out wide, you have a job to do for the team and you just have to get on and do it.
4. With Luis Suarez back from suspension, you will now be partnering him in attack rather than being the lone striker. How do you feel about that? And what is it like to play with an immensely talented striker like Suarez?
Sturridge:Ai??Heai??i??s a very talented guy and we get on well, we have great chemistry on and off the field. Itai??i??s easier when youai??i??ve got somebody like Luis who helps bring out the best in everyone on the pitch. We do work well together and we just seem to know where each other are on the pitch! But we have a strong team and they provide the opportunities for us.
5. What, in your opinion, has been the major difference in Liverpool’s approach to this season? Not many fans and pundits would have expected such a superb start from your side at beginning of the season.
Sturridge:Ai??Yeah it has been a great start to the season! This year Brendan has instilled into us the need to have a winning mentality and everybodyai??i??s now got that feeling to want to win every game. Therefore weai??i??ve built a great team ethos, which has enabled us to go out and play positive football every week, helping us to get some great results along the way. Hopefully it will continue.
6. With the way things are going in the Premier League so far, do you think Liverpool can make a return to the Champions League next season?
Sturridge: I think itai??i??s hard to predict anything this early in the season as thereai??i??s so many games left to play, but as long as we focus on our jobs and play to the best of our ability week in week out I believe anything is possible.
7. Have you ever considered making a move to a club outside England? Do you think English players must consider moving abroad a little more in order to better their game?
Sturridge:Ai??I think the Premier League is a very strong league, with so many high quality players playing here now. So I donai??i??t think that you have to move abroad to improve your game as there is already an exceptional standard of football played within the UK. I would definitely be interested in moving to the MLS in the USA towards the end of my career, thatai??i??s somewhere where Iai??i??d really like to give a go, because culturally, I really like the way it is over there.
8. Is there any particular player on whom you have modeled your game?
Sturridge:Ai??I wouldnai??i??t say Iai??i??ve modeled my game on anyone as such, but Steven Gerrardai??i??s one player who is a great role model to look up to; heai??i??s a great man on and off the field. Heai??i??s one of those people that gets on with everybody. Since Iai??i??ve been here, heai??i??s taken care of me and helped me to settle into the club and new surroundings, to be honest itai??i??s great to have him around. Heai??i??s been one of the worldai??i??s best players as well for many years and Iai??i??ve got a lot of respect for him.
9. You’ve been in sides that have boasted of two of the biggest captains in English football, John Terry and Steven Gerrard. Who would you say is the better captain?
Sturridge: I think theyai??i??re both great captains in their own ways, having led both of their respective sides. I feel that it would be unfair to choose one as a better captain, as theyai??i??re both true legends of the game and great captains.
10. Who is the hardest opponent you have ever come across?
Sturridge:Ai??Thiago Silva is one of the great Brazilian defenders, brilliant in attack and solid in defense. Heai??i??s got a potent mix of speed and strength that makes him one of the toughest defenders in the world to play against.
11. Congratulations on reaching the World Cup! Are you excited to get out to Brazil?
Sturridge:Ai??It is great that we qualified, and a relief! Brazil will be amazing Iai??i??m sure; there will be a great vibe and a real party atmosphere. The team want success and we will work hard, but at the moment I just want to do my best to ensure I will be on the plane, God willing I will be.
