Chelsea lie nervously in wait as Arsenal come stumbling through the barricades. Here’s a game that ought to have far greater significance. It should be about two sides, each with a shot at the title, wrecking each others aspirations and trying to claw their way over the finish line. It should be about one side within reach of the title, only to be stopped by their crosstown rivals playing the spoiler. It should be about a clash of two opposing philosophies – one that prizes speed and finesse, the other prizing technical discipline and persistence.

Instead, we’re left with a washed-out shell of a clash that despite all the noise surrounding it, will make little difference to the league. While the victor might strengthen their claim to a Top 4 finish, that advantage is unlikely to be crucial, considering half the season is yet to be played. This game is a testament to how definitively the balance of power in the Barclays Premier League has swung Manchester’s way, while London fiddled.

Team News and Tactical Brief

Chelsea FC

Rafa Benitez will go with Demba Ba up front, who scored his two last goals for Newcastle against Arsenal, on December 29th 2012. Ba who lurks within goal range at all times, often finds himself on the scoresheet with deft flicks of his foot, and will be a surprising proposition for an Arsenal side that has been used to being at the receiving end of sheer brute force at Stamford Bridge. Ramires will be deployed on the right, with Hazard playing his counterpart on the left. Mata will have his task cut out, just behind the striker, trying to outdo Cazorla in midfield.

Frank Lampard and David Luiz have become the holding midfield duo preferred by Rafa Benitez, with both players complementing each others’ strengths. Lampard’s experienced level-headedness is just the tonic for Luiz’s risk-fueled exuberance. It’s unclear whether John Terry will start the game, but any combination of two from Chelsea’s central defensive ranks – Terry, Ivanovic and Cahill – is likely to be on the slower side. Ashley Cole and Azpilicueta will provide the necessary pace on the flanks to help Chelsea’s central defense cope with Wenger’s inevitable injection of pace up front. Ivanovic at right back would be a more reliable defensive option, but that will be contingent on Terry starting.

Unlike Villas-Boas, Rafa Benitez will feel no need to operate his team under a high defensive line. Against Arsenal’s attack, that would be a recipe for a disaster.

Arsenal FC

With Walcott inking a lucrative new deal, Arsenal have made peace with the notion of him as their chief striker. With Podoloski, Ox-Chamberlain and Cazorla also likely to feature in offense, the Gunners will keep Chelsea’s backline busy. In Wilshere and Diaby, Arsenal will have to trust, in the absence of Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky to keep Chelsea’s more star-studded midfield from dictating proceedings in the middle of the field. Koscielny will be back after serving his one-match suspension, and will likely partner Vermaelen in central defense.

Wenger could opt for Mertesacker in a bid to exert aerial dominance over Chelsea’s diminutive front line, but that could prove costly as Per will struggle against the nimble-footed likes of Hazard and Mata. Gibbs will be key for Wenger, as his pace could create problems for Chelsea on their suspect right flank. With only Ramires to contend with, Gibbs could wreak havoc in collaboration with Podolski.

Arsenal look the more balanced team, and will have to hope that makes up the difference with Chelsea’s more talented individual stars. The Gunners have also never lost a game after taking the lead, this season, and will need to score before Chelsea get into rhythm.

Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

After signing a three and a half year deal, Walcott will be gunning to prove its money well spent by his side, as he hopes to cement his status as Arsenal’s highest scorer this season with 8 goals. He could come up against fellow countrymen John Terry and Gary Cahill, in what will be a physically imposing Chelsea defense. Walcott will need to hit Chelsea on the counter, replying on his incredible pace, when the Blues are most vulnerable.

Demba Ba (Chelsea)

With just as much to prove, if not more, is Chelsea’s striker du jour. Having unseated Fernando Torres up front, Ba is now Chelsea’s top dog. Having made a mockery of Arsenal when playing for Newcastle United, Demba Ba now has a star-studded midfield backing him up. While getting on the scoresheet is Ba’s top concern, he’ll also need to hold the ball up for Chelsea more effectively. Any loss of possession could trigger an Arsenal break.
