The highly anticipated clash between Manchester United and Chelsea ended in a stale-mate. We bring you the talking points from this clash.
The much anticipated showdown between the ai???Special Oneai??i?? and the ai???Chosen Oneai??i?? turned out to be anything but special as both sides flattered to deceive. On a night that had promised so much, in the end delivered so little as both teams theoretically cancelled each other out. On the basis of what was on offer last night, both teams looked to be lacking the cutting edge and perhaps one last dip in the transfer market might well be worth it.
Pre-game banter
All the noise surrounding this encounter was focused on one individual – the mercurial Wayne Rooney.Ai?? Chelsea and Jose Mourinho have made their admiration clear and United too havenai??i??t budged from their stance of no sale. Mourinhoai??i??s pregame comments only added fuel to the hitherto simmering feud between the two clubs as the Portuguese mastermind went on the offensive against David Moyes. The United manager already under fire from the media did well not to react. Mourinho has never been shy of a word or two and his comments must be a taken with a pinch of salt.

Team selections and tactics
Despite all the focus on Rooneyai??i??s selection, it was the Chelsea line up that raised a few eyebrows. The Stamford Bridge club started with an unconventional striker-less formation with their new acquisition Schurrle the furthest forward. United, on the other hand played with three recognized strikers in the playing eleven and looked to take the game to the opposition.
Chelsea were disciplined, difficult to break down and their strategy was to break quickly and counter attack against a not-so young United backline. Ai??United hogged possession, while Chelsea sat deep and look for runners from midfield to carve open the United rearguard. Chelsea have quite an enviable array of attack minded midfielders at their disposal but on the night none really took the game by the proverbial scruff of the neck.
United on the other hand tried to stretch the game as wide as possible, especially from their right wing where Antonio Valencia was heavily involved right from the outset. But, the Red Devils couldnai??i??t find the killer pass and lacked penetration in the final third.Ai?? Mata & Kagawa: Would they have made a difference?
Juan Mata and Shinji Kagawa are arguably the most gifted individuals on either side at least with respect to picking a lock in the opposition defense.Ai?? Hence, it was a surprise when neither man was asked to make any contributions for their side.Ai?? Their physical conditioning is perhaps not the best right now and hence the duo couldnai??i??t start, but surely it was worth the punt to try a game changer of their pedigree for at least the final third of the game?
Rooney, RVP, Welbeck and Kagawa all together will be too hard to accommodate and that is an issue that Moyes must deal with. For Chelsea with the signing of Willian confirmed as well, will Mourinho do the unthinkable and let Chelseaai??i??s player of the year leave?
Striking woes for the Blues
Itai??i??s clear that the Chelsea manager doesnai??i??t quite rate Demba Ba and Fernando Torres very highly. The Spaniard made the bench whereas Demba Ba was not even in the squad. Lukaku is gifted but perhaps still a bit too raw and hence cannot be relied upon to be the lead striker. Honors even on the night
Chelsea have seven points from three games and have looked rather solid, something which they didnai??i??t in the previous two seasons. Mourinho has surely made the team compact and difficult to infiltrate. Championships are built on solid foundations and Chelsea look good for the long run. A point at Old Trafford is never a bad return and Mourinho will still be the Happy One as of now.
David Moyes, on the other hand, would be fairly satisfied too. Walking out at Old Trafford as the home manager with the seventy thousand odd vociferous home crowd must have been a daunting task and now with the first home game under his belt, Moyes can relax.
