As Arsenal FC and Tottenham Hotspur prepare to battle for superiority in the North London derby, two rival fans engage in friendly pre-match banter.
The long awaited North London derby is upon us. Both the club have endured contrasting summers. While Arsene Wenger and Arsenal has faced heavy criticism for their lack of activity in the transfer market, Spurs have gone on a spending spree. There is a real sense of optimism among the Tottenham supporters, who believe this will finally be the season they will topple Arsenal from the top-four. This derby will prove to be a litmus test to those claims.
On the eve of this exciting derby match,Ai??TheHardTackleAi??is back with its Rival Rendezvous series. In this edition, two of our resident authors Amlan Majumdar (AM hereafter), a passionate Gooner,Ai??and Joseph George (JG hereafter), who is an ardent Tottenham supporter, goes head to head in a war of words. Being the host, Amlan allows Joseph to have the first go at him in this match up.
JG : Even with the money and lure of Champions League available, Arsenal has failed to bring in quality players this summer? What is going wrong at the Emirates – The manager or management?
AM : It has been a collective failure and I donai??i??t think it is right to single out anyone. At the start of the summer a lot of promises were made, but nothing has been delivered yet. Ai??But it is perhaps right to say that Arsene Wenger will have to shoulder most of the blame for this as he has the final word on transfers, as he does on most of the clubai??i??s affairs. While it is admirable that Wenger doesnai??i??t want to pay over the top for a transfer target, it is unwise to expect that other clubs will play by his rules. In this inflated transfer market, where every player is overpriced Arsene Wenger will have to adapt. Having said that, the board will also have to share the blame, it feels they havenai??i??t pushed Wenger hard enough. There are also question marks about the support staff that Arsene Wenger has to help him out in these deals; Dick Law has also come under a lot of criticism and it feels that Wenger needs better people around him.
JG :Ai??From Fellaini to Flamini: How do you rate Arsenal’s transfer window?
AM :Ai??It certainly hasnai??i??t gone according to plans. It started off well as we managed to offload most of the deadwood. It gave the fans hope that the mass departure is a precursor to the arrivals that will take place. But despite offloading so many players, we havenai??i??t managed to replace them and this has left the squad very thin ai??i?? while we were hoping for quality additions, we are now light on quantity as well. But we hope Arsenal can still make some key signing before the window closes, although it is unlikely that any of the last minute arrivals will be of the same quality as the players we were linked to initially.
JG :Ai??The way Mathew Flamini made his way out of Arsenal earlier, are you happy about his return (as an Arsenal fan)?
AM :Ai??There is divided opinion about Flamini, mostly because fans still remember how he left the club. Having said that, in a situation where we desperately needed a back-up for Arteta in the midfield, Flamini can be a shrewd piece of business, specialty considering he was a free agent. He has never been the same player since his departure from the Emirates, but if Wenger can get the best out of him, he will soon get the support of the fans.
JG :Ai??For the past few seasons Arsenal are happy with a Champions League spot and a place above Spurs. Will you be happy with the same this season as well?
AM :Ai??In all fairness, finishing above Spurs has never been the main goal for our club, because there has hardly been an uncertainly about that. Playing in the Champions League is of course very important for the club as big as Arsenal, but our ambitions can never be limited to that. In recent rimes, we havenai??i??t had the squad to compete for the title, but there was hope this summer that we can add enough quality to the squad in order to achieve that. The club has publicly accepted that the financial constraints, which has held back Arsenal in the transfer market since moving to the new stadium, has been lifted. Hence there can be no excuse now for the club to be happy with a top-four finish. The club has to get back to winning ways pretty soon.
JG :Ai??What all ingredients are lacking in Arsenal squad for a title challenge? Do you think Arsene Wenger can match the new generation managers to reclaim a spot at the top?
AM :Ai??What we are lacking at the moment is quality in the squad, in fact at the moment we donai??i??t even have the right quantity to match with our rivals. Despite all the criticism, Arsene Wenger still remains one of the best in the business and I donai??i??t think Arsenal need to look past him in order to progress. What the club needs is a change in mentality, specially a bit of aggression in the transfer market ai??i?? and not a change in manager. With the right squad, Wenger will be able to guide back the club to the glory days. In fact very few managers could have achieved what Wenger has in such a tight budget.
JG :Ai??What will be the future of Tomas Rosicky at the Emirates? He was impressive on the opening day defeat against Aston Villa. What is preventing him from hitting his peak?
AM :Ai??Rosicky is one of the most talented players to have played for the club in recent times, but his bad luck with injuries has always held him back. A fit Rosicky is still among the best playmakers in the league. His recent performances have been encouraging, and if he can maintain his fitness then he will be a huge plus for Arsenal this season.

AM :Ai??There is a belief that after with all the new arrivals Spurs have become a better team even without Gareth Bale in it. Do you agree with that? Will Spurs still miss him?
JG :Ai??Premier League’s best player will be missed at any team if he bids adieu at his peak.Ai??The quality and ability of Bale will be difficult to replace. But in this case, Daniel Levy and co. have played their part perfectly after learning the lessons from Berbatov and Modric transfer sagas. He has brought players of superior quality to strengthen multiple positions and thus negated the void left by the Welsh wizard. Spurs survived even after Modric and Berbatov left them and I think it will be the same here as well.
AM :Ai??In the opening two matches Tottenham have failed to score from open play and had to rely on penalties to win the game. Is it a cause concern for Tottenham? Do they still lack creativity in the midfield?
JG :Ai??In the opening two games there wasn’t any area of concern apart from goal scoring. The way Tottenham have dominated the game and created the chances with so many new players points out fingers towards a bright future. New signings always takes time to gel with a new team, but superior players makes the process little easy and that is what we can see at Tottenham. Spurs were the better team in all departments and with players getting used to each other every passing day, we can expect more dominating displays in future. 4 clean sheets out of 4 isn’t a bad start, right?
AM :Ai??Now to the obvious question ai??i?? at the start of past few seasons Tottenham players have come out and claimed how they can overtake Arsenal, but they have failed to do so thus far. So what are the chances of history repeating itself once again?
JG :Ai??Arsenal have been able to cling on to a place above Tottenham somehow till now. There has been a slide in Arsenal’s performances after their last title (when was it?) and Wenger seems to be unable to cope up with the demands of modern game. Tottenham’s aim is not just to finish above Arsenal, it’s not even a yard stick nowadays. Spurs are targeting the top spot in Premier League and that day won’t be far.
AM :Ai??Among all the new arrivals, who do you think could be the most important purchase this summer?
JG :Ai??All the new arrivals are brought with a specific plan and will have a specific role in the new look Tottenham team. Soldado is expected to solve the goal scoring issues while Capoue brings more steel and will provide an ideal presence in AVB’s midfield. But the most important signing will be that of Brazilian Paulinho.Ai??He has shown his qualities for the Selecao side in Confederations Cup with his vital contributions at both ends of the pitch. He is someone who has carried a great team like Brazil on his shoulders and his ability to step up on big games will make the difference for Spurs as well.
AM :Ai??After investing so much money in the squad, what is the minimum expectation for Tottenham this season?
JG :Ai??If you prepare the balance sheet with the income and expenditures, Tottenham had a perfect window. With the kind of rebuilding they have undergone this summer, it might take some time for all the things to fall in place. But the talent and class of this squad will see them putting up a brave title challenge this season if not more.
