Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit out at reporters for giving ai???wrong informationai??i?? regarding reports of him signing a new deal until 2016.
Arsenal hosts Bayern Munich in the first leg of their tie in the round of 16 in the Champions League today. Although realistically the Germans are the favourites in this tie, the Champions League currently represents Gunnersai??i?? only hope of a silverware this season after they were knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Championship side Blackburn Rovers last weekend.
The loss to Blackburn meant that Arsene Wenger once again faced heavy criticism from fans, pundits and media alike. Amidst such unrest among the supporters, reports in the English media suggested that Wenger is close to signing a two year extension on his current contract. But the Arsenal manager has rubbished these claims ai??i??labelling it as ai???wrong informationai??i??.
The Frenchman faced questions regarding his future at the club during the pre-match press conference and the Arsenal boss didnai??i??t seem to be in a jovial mood.
“That is the wrong information.ai??? – Wenger said when asked about reports suggestion he is about to sign a new contract at the club.
“I’ve worked for 16 years in England and I think I deserve a bit more credit than wrong information with only one intention – to harm.
“If it’s good information that comes from nowhere, it’s alright. But this is the wrong information that comes from nowhere. It’s completely wrong.” ai??i?? he added.
The Arsenal manager was further questioned about his long term plans at the club, to which he replied ai??i??
“I’m not in the mood to think about it.
“I will assess my own performances and then make a decision. If I don’t do well, I have to consider my future.”
The English media wouldnai??i??t pass off any opportunity of needling Arsene Wenger and this time the Frenchman, who normally behaves politely during press conferences, did lose his patience.
Although one can understand the frustration growing among the fans, one of the most unreasonable criticism that Wenger has faced recently was about his team selection for the match against Blackburn. The starting eleven that the Arsenal manager picked was good enough to beat a Championship side. It is time for the players to shoulder the blame and the responsibility.
Arsene Wenger stands up for his players and protects them from criticism; it is time for the players to stand up for the manager, the fans and for themselves. Wenger has invested a lot of faith on this squad and now the players should pay him back.
