Sir Alex Ferguson usually came out on top in the transfer market in his 26 years as manager. There were a few that got away, but not many have succeeded in irritating him the way Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy did when Tottenham Hotspurs sneakily bought Ezekiel Fryers from Standard Liege in January 2013.

To cut a long story short, Zeki Fryers was out of contract in May 2012, and rejected the offer for a new one. Since he was less than 20 years old, Tottenham needed to pay a compensation fee to Manchester United for developing the player, as per rules related to transfers within England. The clubs failed to agree on a fee, and suddenly, Zeki Fryers was off to Standard Liege. But, a change in manager followed by suggestions of homesickness saw him back in England six months later, this time in North London! Rather than pay A?6m to Manchester United for developing the player, Spurs reportedly wound up parting with a total of A?900,000. There was a loophole in the law, made full use of by one of the toughest deal makers in the transfer market ai??i?? ai???dirtyai??i?? business practice, but well within the rules.
Since 2001, Daniel Levy has attempted to reverse the trend, at Tottenham Hotspur, of buying average players at big fees on long-term contracts and selling them for massive losses. Sure, the likes of Jurgen Klinsmann, David Ginola and Ilie Dumitrescu plied their trade at White Hart Lane with Lord Alan Sugar at the helm. But, in the absence of sugar daddy owners and a large stadium, they would never have been transformed from false dawn specialists to regular contenders for Champions League qualification without the hard-nosed approach of Daniel Levy.
The master deal maker
Deadline day is always chaotic, but nothing beats the shock and awe that accompanied the news of Rafael van der Vaart signing for Spurs in 2010. But Tottenham Hotspur are susceptible to having their talented personnel picked off by the wealthier and more ai???prestigiousai??i?? teams in Europe. In this regard, the Spurs chairman is an absolute nightmare to deal with. Manchester United have had a particularly hard time ai??i?? Levy squeezed an extra A?5m out of them for Dimitar Berbatov, while the fee of A?18m for Michael Carrick was disproportionately large in those days. Flatly refusing to sell Luka ModriAi?? to Chelsea was meant to be statement of not wanting to sell their best players to direct rivals. Liverpool fans too, will tell you about how red-faced they were when they got to know that Clint Dempsey will be playing in North London rather than the North-west. Transfers in and out of White Hart Lane, in Sir Alexai??i??s words, have his fingerprints all over it.
The Gareth Bale Saga

Not all smooth sailing
One can almost picture Daniel Levy sitting in his office on deadline day rubbing a lamp in the hope that a genie would grant him three wishes only to find a red-faced manager instead. For every Rafael van der Vaart there was a Wilson Palacios, and for every Hugo Lloris there is a Heurelho Gomes.
The Spursai??i?? chairman is a master at selling, but hasnai??i??t always done well in buying players for the squad. Ever since he managed to pull off one of the bargains of the century in buying Rafael van der Vaart, he has unsuccessfully tried to do the same in Spursai??i?? efforts to bring in top strikers. Efforts to squeeze every last penny out of Manchester United on Deadline Day left the Lily-whites without a suitable replacement when the window slammed shut. It contributed to Spursai??i?? terrible start to the 08-09 season and ultimately cost Juande Ramos his job. History repeated itself under AndrAi?? Villas-Boas in 2012-13. Despite injuries to both Jermain Defoe and Adebayor, there was no Leandro Damiao and no David Villa; rather it was Clint Dempsey leading the line. Roberto Soldado has arrived, but what would happen were he to get injured? Spurs would have to depend on a man who stops trying once he gets a contract. Levy may often be driven more by his eye for a deal than anything else ai??i?? the Zeki Fryers affair may well have been just that.
Depending on your persuasion, Daniel Levy is a slimy wheeler dealer, or an evil genius. But despite how his flaws and his antics have shortchanged Spurs in terms of squad strength in the recent past, Tottenham Hotspur would never have got to where they are today without clever dealings in the transfer market. No large stadium, no sugar daddy owners, no problem. Spursai??i?? supporters can not only trust their chairman to stand up to bigger and wealthier clubs when it comes to selling top players, they can also be safe in the knowledge that the club is run on a sound financial footing in the near future.
