The first eight games of the season brought 7 wins and 1 draw, including the defeat of Premier League side Sunderland in the Carling Cup. It really seemed that Brighton had adapted seamlessly to life in the Championship and were sitting pretty at the top of the table, ahead of fellow promoted team Southampton.
However, the following 10 games produced just 4 points and 6 defeats, including a first home league loss to hated rivals, Crystal Palace. A mini revival of 4 wins in 5 games suggested a crisis had been averted before a series of injuries contributed to another poor run over the Christmas period. This ultimately meant that Brighton finished 2011 in 16th place and looking down the table with concern rather than up the table with hope.
The new year has really signaled a change in fortune. A rousing 3-0 victory against South Coast rivals Southampton kicked off a 10-game unbeaten run that has brought 17 league points and another Premier League scalp in the form of Newcastle United, this time in the FA Cup.
This consistency of performance has come about for a number of reasons. Manager Gus Poyet has always been adamant that he would stay true to his philosophy of progressive, possession-based football and not revert to a more direct style of play but the December loan signing of Billy Paynter from Leeds United, a more traditional English centre forward, seemed to be an admission that there was a need to mix things up.
While Paynter’s signing did not work out, with the striker returning to Leeds having not scored in his month-long spell with the club, it opened up the possibility of a different approach and while results remained poor with him in the side, it was his departure that coincided with the upturn in form.
Other players also stepped up at this time, with Peter Brezovan in goal, Matt Sparrow in central midfield and Will Buckley in wide areas particularly impressing. The consistency of Liam Bridcutt and Gordon Greer has also been key.
Brighton play a fluid form of 4-3-3 with Bridcutt, Sparrow and Alan Navarro usually occupying the midfield and Craig MacKail-Smith leading the line, usually supported by Ashley Barnes and either Will Buckley, Craig Noone or Kazenga Lua-Lua. The latter two have suffered with injuries recently and are feeling their way back into the side and the arrival of Sam Vokes on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers has seen him come into contention for one of the front places.
Surprisingly, considering Brightonai??i??s recent run of good form, on Tuesday against Millwall, Poyet started the game with a somewhat defensive line-up, with Bridcutt, Navarro and West Brom loan signing Jara Reyes making up a rather narrow midfield ahead of Noone and Lua Lua, who waited on the bench. It left the wide attacking responsibilities down to full backs Joe Mattock – also on loan from West Brom – and Inigo Calderon, but with limited results. After coming back twice to draw 2-2 with goals from Vokes, his first for the club, and a late free kick from Lua Lua, Poyet admitted that he had got his team selection wrong and took responsibility for a somewhat flat performance.

The FA Cup trip to Liverpool on Sunday will be the two clubs’ second meeting this season after the Premier League club ended Brightonai??i??s League Cup interests at the Amex in September. Liverpool have arguably had a far more eventful season than Brighton, with off-field events featuring their Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez dominating the headlines. Poyet had earlier defended his fellow countryman in his race row with Manchester Unitedai??i??s Patrice Evra but the two will be firmly in their own camps this weekend.
In the Carling Cup game, Brighton gave a very good performance in a 2-1 defeat, enough to suggest that they can cause Liverpool problems again. That game came at a time when Brighton were on a high after their bright start and they played with confidence and positivity. The difference on the night came down to a few individuals and so it may be at Anfield on Sunday.
Craig Bellamy was Liverpoolai??i??s standout player at the Amex, scoring one and being involved in everything that Liverpool did well. Suarez, Dirk Kuyt, Jay Spearing and the returning Steven Gerrard also featured and in the end, their class was just too much for Brighton.
This time around, Brighton are again playing well and should return to a more attacking line-up. Poyet should look to Will Buckley and Craig Noone to provide the threat going forward. Buckley has been in goal-scoring form since the turn of the year, scoring late winners against Peterborough and Leicester and forcing the own goal that despatched Newcastle in the previous round of the cup. Noone and Navarro are staunch Liverpool fans and will relish playing at Anfield alongside their heroes but will be keen to give a good account of themselves.
Two new faces may feature for Brighton having been signed today, just in time for potential inclusion in Sunday’s squad. Midfielders Abdul Razak and Gai Assulin have been loaned from Manchester City, Assulin for one month and Razak until the end of the season. Razak, in particular, looks a great addition and Poyet described him as the type of midfielder he has wanted to bring in for some time; someone with strength, box-to-box ability and technical prowess”.
Another player that may feature for Brighton, although perhaps from the bench, will be Vicente Rodriguez. The Spanish winger, signed from Valencia in the summer, has shown a level of class and composure some way above anyone else in the Brighton squad and in his two most recent substitute appearances, he has created 3 goals. His fitness has been a worry and he did not feature against Millwall but has been declared fit to play some part on Sunday.
The romance of the FA Cup is often referred to and, despite the overwhelming priority of league football, it still holds true. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Brighton will visit Anfield in the league next season but for now the club and its supporters are buzzing in anticipation of the trip. 6000 Brighton fans will make the 500-mile round trip and even the players have shared in the excitement with Craig Noone tweeting that he was ai???shouting all round his living room on his ownai??? on hearing the draw.
Many Brighton fans have remarked that the last time they made it to the FA Cup final, their run featured defeats of Newcastle and Liverpool. Could history repeat itself? Brighton will be hoping it does.
