The Independent has reported that Arsenal are closing in on a double swoop for Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and former club legend Thierry Henry in the January transfer window.
Arsenal have been struggling so far in the Premier League, far away from the title race and looking particularly likely to even clinch a top 4 finish, and ArsA?ne Wenger is rumoured to be about to reinforce his squad with two strikers of certified quality: Schalke’s Huntelaar, who has been one of Europe’s leading goalscorer over the past few years and another loan of club legend Thierry Henry.
The Dutch striker is in the last year of his contract at Schalke and his apparent refusal to sign an extension has forced Schalke to listen to offers and try to get something out of his exit while there’s still time. Some sectors of the press suggest that a 5 million agreement is about to be struck between the two clubs, which would be an absolute bargain for a player who has scored 58 goals in his last 68 matches while playing in argubaly Europe’s most competitive big league. If Arsenal manage to complete this deal, their attacking force will be significantly bolstered with Huntelaar almost guaranteering goals, plenty of them, almost like a late replacement for Robin Van Persie.
But that’s not the only reinforcement Arsenal have in sight for the January transfer window. ArsA?ne Wenger is looking to bring back Thierry Henry, as he did last year with very decent results – 2 goals in 7 matches, both decisive. Ai??Only this time Arsenal are rumoured to be trying to extend the deal so it lasts until the end of the season; the loan spell until March will be no problem but Red Bull want Henry back in March for the MLS just like last year, and it is not yet clear how Arsenal will try to demote them or even whether there will be a serious attempt to do so.
These signings would significantly improve Arsenal’s quality and depth at the striker position, with Giroud having had to carry most of the burden during the first half of the season, and significantly improve Arsenal’s chances of fighting for the top positions come the end of the season and mount a challenge in the Champions League.
