Milan did not start off their 2012-13 season in a triumphant fashion, as the last summer saw not only the removal and retirement of experienced hands, but also the multi-million dollar transfer of their prized assets to a club from Paris. From the very onset of the season, the fans knew that this will be a season for heartbreaks, a season for losses, a season for humiliation and a season for pain. Till now, Milan have not deviated from that path and despite some knights in shining armor, Milan’s future looks as bleak as the blistery Christmas sweeping through Italy at this time.
After it has been repeatedly stated by almost every boss at every level, Milan will not indulge in buying marquee players – at least not for the foreseeable future. Sadly, on the other hand, Milan might sell off their crown jewels if and when ‘the right price comes in’. While that is indeed a sad precedent for a club of Milan’s stature, the current financial condition of Italy offers little but grim realization that the era of successful Italian clubs might be on the wane. There has been numerous meetings regarding how to improve the structure of Serie A so as to attract the best and brightest of talents from all over the world once again like the 80’s and 90’s. Sadly, all that talk has remained locked inside board meetings and cabinet discussions.
However, with the influx of foreign players stalling, Milan have looked into their Primavera squad in order to recruit first-team players. Needless to say, that has been one bright spot in their season so far. There have been a few players who have been directly inducted into the first team from the Primavera squad and a few others are waiting on the wings to grab their chance. Bryan Cristante, Kingsley Boateng, Simone Ganz and Andrea Petagna have all come through the Milan Academy and are presently on the cusp of being first-team material. And given the present nature of the squad, their induction could come sooner rather than later. Among these players, Cristante already had his Champions League debut last year.
The two players to have improved immensely are none other than El Shaarawy and De Sciglio. Needless to say, both of them are 20-year-old.
And at this young age, they are carrying the weight of the entire Milan squad on their shoulders. It has been a long time since a player of such caliber has represented Milan straight from the Primavera squad and it is indeed heartening to see that in the absence of foreign players, Milan can count on their Primavera squad to deliver the goods. Alberto Paloschi is another Primavera product who’s been going around on loan for some time. Destined to be the heir to the great Inzaghi, Paloschi found very limited first-team opportunities primarily due to Ibrahimovic. Now that the big Swede has departed Italian shores, it might be a good time to bring him in rather than spend on new strikers.
The question about new strikers arises due to the present situation involving Robinho and Pato. After a miserable season on the sidelines, Pato returned in action this season only to injure and then re-injure himself once more. Milan have spent a considerable fortune behind Pato in order to get him into a playing position but his repeated injuries is not doing anyone any good – not to Milan and certainly not to Pato himself. Maybe the only reason he is still there is because he is in a relationship with Barbera Berlusconi or maybe because Milan still believe he has it in him to create that magic that stunned Barcelona within the opening minute in last year’s Champions League at Camp Nou. However, after spending so much effort behind Pato, it was heartbreaking for Milan to find that he decided to talk with his agent first before discussing his situation with the board. After all, you never go behind your family’s back to meet your objectives. Pato is likely to be sold, most probably to Corinthians as Galliani is moving to Brazil to iron out a deal with them. Milan
Robinho, on the other hand, flourished under Ibrahimovic but has floundered big time with the present team and the current formation. It’s amazing to see how many mediocre players appeared superhuman under the influence of Ibrahimovic; case in point – Nocerino. Robinho too is frustrated with the limited first-team opportunities and has voiced his concern for a move back to his native place. Santos was the place where he started his football career and as per his latest comments, he is open to a move back to a place he calls home. Robinho, however has been less direct than Pato, since it was Milan who offered him refuge and a chance to rebuild his career after Manchester City. Santos, Flamengo and Fluminense are seemingly chasing Robinho with a bid of around ai??i??8m while Corinthians want Pato for about ai??i??15m.
All in all, Milan are likely to receive a sum of around ai??i??23m as a result of the sale of these two Brazilians. Allegri has recently gone on record to state that Milan need at least five strikers, and with this dual sale, they might need another striker in the January transfer window. However, what Milan can do is to look to bring back Paloschi and train him. Milan already know that this season is not about trophies but about survival; it’s about building a team from the scratch. Milan could do away with any needless spending and try to remain in Europe for the next season. If at all Allegri needs a fifth striker, he can always fall back on Niang or PAi??rez.
Sometime back it was reported that Niang might be on his way out of Milan and within a matter of a few weeks, all that has changed and he was given a new contract on his birthday. If this does not show Milan’s intention to keep him for a longer time, what does? The season is only halfway through and with the next half about to begin with a match against Siena, Allegri might need to count his gains more than his losses.
