Manchester United Season Review 2011-12: Faltering At The Last Hurdle

So close and yet so excruciatingly far. That feeling of coming up short just as the chequered flag was about to be waved will be hard to let go. In one of the most iconic seasons in Premier League football history, rivals City upstaged United in a photo finish by the length of a finger nail. Sergio Agueroai??i??s last gasp winner drilled a dagger through infinite Red hearts and probably changed the whole complexion of the season. The nine month long grinding campaign ended without silverware ai??i?? the first time since 2004. This was also the first time in more than a decade that the Reds failed to reach a cup final which brought an end to an outstanding run and a proud achievement. Some day or the other though the run had to come to an end and this season proved a nadir.

City Deserve The Title But United Deserve Credit

Man City deserve their triumph as they have had a fantastic season by all counts. United though, deserve a lot of credit – something which they have been denied in most quarters. The talk of crisis is premature and ill-founded. Perspective is the first thing that gets lost looking at sensationalist headlines coming out in the papers. The talk of the downfall of the ai???Red Empireai??i?? is surely premature.

Ferguson and United will be back stronger and better next season!

.

Domestically United have had a more than decent campaign bordering on outstanding. One just needs to look at the points accumulated. 89 points would win you the league nine times out of ten and this year too it almost did.

One canai??i??t possibly overlook the injury crisis that plagued United and it was once again the astute management of the gaffer that brought them so tantalizingly close. Unitedai??i??s squad was the worst hit by the persistent injuries, conversely Citizenai??i??s were blessed when it came to players needing treatment. To think at the end of it all it came down to mere goal difference, is a testimony to Unitedai??i??s spirit. Club captain Nemanja Vidic was absent for almost three fourths of the campaign. Vidic is worth his weight in gold and despite young Evans stepping up to the plate brilliantly, surely the Serbian was missed.

Darren Fletcher, Anderson and Tom Cleverley all missed major portions of the campaign and at times the squad was down to bare bones, especially in the central midfield department. Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes mk2 kept the flame alight and almost pulled off a minor miracle. Nevertheless, the squad needs reinforcements in the middle of the park, but thatai??i??s a whole different can of worms best left untouched for the moment.

United top the injury league!

.

In midst of all the gloom and doom that the final day brought upon us, one seems to forget the absolutely sparkling opening to the season. The duo of Anderson and Cleverley combined ever so magnificently and although the defense felt exposed at times, United more often than not handsomely outscored their opponents in a series of jaw dropping displays of attacking football. Tragically though, Sir Alex was never able to recall that combination in the latter part of that campaign. Although at times the all guns blazing & hung-ho approach looked like a loose cannon, it sure had an impact which no one can deny.

Nightmare In Basel And Europe In General

Since that agonizing exit in the group stages in Portugal all those years ago, Fergusonai??i??s men have been remarkably consistent on the continent. Three finals including a win and a semi final since that horrible group stage bow is a testament; nonetheless, this campaign team United failed on all counts and deserved to go out.

Ferguson has always maintained that one needs to win the three home games and probably one away win would do. United performed miserably at the Theatre of Dreams and at times were lucky to come out with draws. It wasnai??i??t the usual clinical United, but a nervy, lackluster and unprofessional shadow of themselves. The manger too didnai??i??t cover himself in glory by picking disjointed and uninspiring teams. Everyone at the club must share the blame for the debacle; there was an apparent complacency in approach and gross under estimation of the opponents. Lessons must be learnt and just like 2005 the younger lot would benefit a lot from such profound disappointment.

That inauspicious night in Basel, United not only bowed out of the European Cup but also lost their inspirational leader ai??i?? Nemanja Vidic and that spelt doomai??i??s day.

Nemanja Vidic's absence ensured United fall short!

.

Europa league failed to inspire much joy amongAi??the fans and the players alike and after overcoming Ajax with a few hiccups on the way, the Red Devils were taught a footballing lesson by Bielsaai??i??s Bilbao boys. Unitedai??i??s exit was almost met with a sigh of relief among Old Trafford faithful thus ending a forgettable European campaign, one which couldnai??i??t possibly get any painful.

Individual Player Performances Review:

Goal Keepers:

Ben Amos: Made just a solitary league appearance against Stoke City at Old Trafford and made a decent enough impression. Amos also made three league cup appearances and although just 22 itai??i??s difficult to see him dislodge De Gea for the number one spot and then thereai??i??s Lindegaard too.

Anders Lindegaard: Danish international made quite the impression in his first few games and accumulated a number of clean sheets in the process. However, Lindegaard didnai??i??t have a great outing in the F.A. Cup game against City at Etihad and looked a bit shaky in the subsequent games. Still, with De Gea struggling with life in the English game, Lindegaardai??i??s injury came at just the wrong moment and now the Spaniard looks to have stolen a march or two. Nevertheless, considering this was his first full season at United, Lindegaard had more than a decent start to life as Unitedai??i??s shot stopper.

David De Gea: So is he any good now? Can we all give him his due? After a nervy and error ridden beginning to life between the posts largely exaggerated by the media, David has turned a corner or two. The moment he flung to his left to deny his compatriot Juan Mata and earn United a well deserved point at the Bridge, David has been a man possessed. Although itai??i??s no more a surprise to see him pull off blinders one after the other, De Geaai??i??s over all command of his area has improved ten folds. The Spaniard isnai??i??t without his flaws but at the age of 22 who is? Thereai??i??s room for improvement but surely the fans couldnai??i??t have asked for more from their new acquisition; make no mistakes David De Gea is surely Unitedai??i??s number one now.

De Gea - The Flying Spaniard!

.

Defense:

United lost Vidic after a terrible injury in Basel and it looked to have killed all hopes, cometh the hour cometh the man and thankfully the others pulled through heroically at times.

Rio Ferdinand: Played like a leader and marshaled the defense admirably. Also heartening to see was Ferdinand playing three games within a span of seven days during the course of the season and his overall much improved fitness. Rio had to fine tune his game after losing a yard or two in pace and the Englishman hasnai??i??t let that deter his performances. This was more like the Ferdinand of old.

Jonny Evans: Outstanding. The Northern Ireland international finally came of age and fulfilled the promise shown in his first two years in the senior side. After the horror showing in the 6-1 demolition derby where he was given the marching orders, Evans barely put a step wrong. Evans at times has brought the ball out from defense and played like a seasoned ball playing defender.

Crucially and rather unfortunately United were unable to call upon the Ferdinand-Evans partnership at the Etihad in that all important season defining clash. Evansai??i?? outstanding growth this term has made Fergieai??i??s job a tough one when Vidic comes back the next season.

Patrice Evra: The French international Left Back had a rather ordinary season and often found himself back tracking after beingAi??ridiculously out of position. His enthusiasm to join in the attacks left United exposed through the left wing on numerous occasions and consequently the opposition had a lot of joy through that area of the field. Nevertheless, Evra ended the season in a better vein and looked to have found a better balance between attack and defense. Average season for the much adored Paddy Evra.

Chris Smalling: A season largely interrupted by injuries, Smalling remains a class act and definitely nailed on to be a future United center back.

Phil Jones: Superb first half of the season, at times bordering on stupendous which forced people to make those rather nonsensical comparisons with one Duncan Edwards. Jones contributed in midfield, center back and right back and although his season failed to match those dizzying heights that it once promised, the 19 year old can be much pleased with his debut campaign.

Rafael DaSilva: Yet another infuriating season swinging from sublime to ridiculous within weeks. Surely Rafael should have nailed down the right back spot by now. However, injuries and inconsistency continues to plague the Brazilian and although he is loved by the OT faithful, patience could start running thin sooner rather than later.

Fabio DaSilva: Injured and largely deprived of playing time, Fabio is all but guaranteed to go on a loan to further his progress. This season though, the Brazilian scarcely featured in the managerai??i??s plans surprising as Fabio started last seasonai??i??s UCL Finals.

Midfield:

Michael Carrick: Mr. Consistent just went on about business in his usual nonchalant manner but this season with much more conviction and assertiveness much like the Carrick of three seasons ago. Omnipresent in the heart of midfield, keeping possession, making the team tick and halting opposition attacks, Carrick did it all and despite not getting the acclaim like the Rooneys or Valencias of this world, the Englishman was easily the most dependable performer through the campaign.

Can't do without Carrick!

.

Paul Scholes: Answered the call of duty and came back to bail out his beloved United. Can you possibly love this guy anymore? Simply peerless, what a player!

Ryan Giggs: Criticized at times and rightfully so, Giggs didnai??i??t really have a stellar season. However, his contribution was still immense during the time United were struggling to put out a midfield combination week in and week out before the return of the Ginger Maestro.

Anderson and Cleverley ai??i?? The duo came out all guns blazing and took the league by storm in the first two months. However both picked up injuries and didnai??i??t make a substantial contribution thereafter. Tom Cleverley is regarded very highly in United circles and next season could possibly see himAi??make an impact in a much larger way. Anderson on the other needs to regain fitness and stay fit and available for starters.

Darren Fletcher: Fit and in form Fletcher was sorely missed, everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery. Fletcherai??i??s been an integral part of the side for some time now and his loss was a major let down.

Luis Nani: By Naniai??i??s very high standards this wasnai??i??t his very best although the Portuguese did have his moments. His early season form was quite spectacular and had it not been for the recurring injuries probably Nani would have contributed a great deal more. Overall it was an average season where he was outshone by another United Winger.

Anotonio Valencia: Unanimously chosen the player of the season by fans and his own team mates, Tony V was at times unplayable. Bulldozing his way through opposition defense the Ecuadorian winger created havoc on left backs up and down the country. Brilliant and selfless at the same time, itai??i??s not difficult to know why fans absolutely love him to bits. Plus he sacked his agent to stay at United for life, is he for real?

Ashley Young: Brilliant start and a great finish garnished with some outstanding goals. However, Young had a mid season blip and was frustrating to watch during those times. Plus he didnai??i??t make many fans with the neutrals because of his tendency to go down easily. Nevertheless, a decent beginning as a Manchester United player for Young and he would hope to build on the good work.

Park Ji Sung: Probably the Koreanai??i??s worst ever season at United and could very well turn out to be his last. Parkai??i??s been a terrific squad player and the quintessential big game player; United will find it hard to replace his energy and desire.

Forwards:

Wayne Rooney: Wazza had a fruitful season in front of goal culminating into his most impressive goal haul in the league, yet Rooney seemed to be playing much within himself at times or so it seemed. The air of unpredictability was missing but the Englishman was terrific in front of goal with the usual Rooney like bursts of goal scoring punctuated with short dry spells. Nevertheless, despite being played in central midfield, left wing or as a much withdrawn striker Rooney took on all the roles and passed with distinction. United fans would hope Rooney continues his rich goal scoring form and also rediscovers his former magical cloak.

The Main Man!

.

Chicharito: Hernandez suffered from the second season syndrome and possibly fatigue as the Mexican has been involved in continuous football and didnai??i??t really have any break. Furthermore the emergence of Welbeck reduced his playing time. An average season at best for Chicho and much to improve upon especially his hold up play and short passing.

Danny Welbeck: The young Mancunianai??i??s first full season will go down as a success with a twelve goals under his belt. However there is much more to Welbeckai??i??s game than just goal scoring and that has kept him in the starting eleven above a stalwart like Berbatov. Still, the Englishman must improve his effectiveness in front of goal and probably his balance too.

Dimitar Berbatov: Didnai??i??t get to play much and when he did Berbatov didnai??i??t disappoint. The Bulgarian doesnai??i??t quite fit into the managerai??i??s plans and in all possibilities will be moving on this summer.

Michael Owen: Played four games, scored three goals and is on his way out of Old Trafford. Owenai??i??s just not fit enough to play and contribute, ergo United has let him go.
