After the F.A Cup third round action last weekend the Barclays Premier League returned with all its thrills and frills and the usual dose of controversy. Champions United got their league campaign back on track with an impressive win at home against Owen Coyleai??i??s struggling Bolton side, while Harry Redknappai??i??s Spurs failed to go join top as they dropped points at home to lowly Wolves. Chelsea picked a hard fought win at home to much improved Sunderland thanks to Super Frank Lampard, however it was Fernando Torres who finally displayed his undoubted talent with a display worthy of his price tag.
Under fire Steve Kean can finally breathe a sigh of relief as ten man Blackburn proved too good for Martin Jolai??i??s Cottagers who still canai??i??t seem to shake off their away day blues. Liverpool on the other hand just canai??i??t seem to find the back of the net at Anfield as they yet again stumbled to a goal less draw against a stubborn Stoke side. Kenny Dalglishai??i??s team selection rose more than a few eyebrows and the Merseyside club produced a rather insipid display in the absence of their talisman ai??i??Luis Suarez.
The Toon army proved a few doubters wrong; they won at home against QPR, in absence of their key players Demba Ba and Check Tiote. Mark Hughes has his work cut out at QPR with the team in free fall and with relegation fears growing alarmingly. Everton and Aston Villa had to manage with a point a piece as Darren Bent’s opener was cancelled out by Victor Anichebe. In other games Norwich City continued their great season with an impressive away win at the Hawthorns.

Moment Of The Round: Paul Scholes Scores For United
Scholes’ return from retirement to United first team was met with a degree of scepticism as it was deemed a backward step by the manager. However there is still no substitute for class and the veteran Englishman displayed that with an assured performance in the heart of Unitedai??i??s midfield. But the moment that made the Red Devils around the world sing and chant in unison arrived late in the first half as the Ginger wizard gave United the lead after a frustrating first half in which the Bolton rearguard managed to deny the Old Trafford club on more than the odd occasion. Such moments are what football is all about, a returning hero rescuing his beloved club.

There were not too many spectacular goals on show this weekend, but out of the few that were scored, this honour goes to the United midfielder for his vision and the ease with which he outfoxed an impressive Adam Bogdan. Carrick, who was brilliant in the game, capped of the performance with an effortless left footed drive , which looked no more than a pass, from 25 yards into the bottom corner.

Darren Bent gave Villa a scarcely deserved lead but as Mcleish’s Villans were sensing a rare home win, Donovan produced a brilliant defense splitting pass which was neatly tucked away by Anichebe. Yakubu raised his foot and made contact on Danny Murphy, however to the surprise of the Nigerian and the Blackburn fans the referee deemed it a sending off challenge and Blackburn were down to ten men. Yet Rovers managed to pick themselves up and in the end won comfortably. However debate still rages over the dismissal of the Yak who according to his manager “isn’t that type of a player“.
In the game between Man United and Bolton, refereeAi??Peter Walton was right to point to the penalty spot when Welbeck was tumbled by Zat Knight. But having done that, it was inexplicable as to why Knight wasn’t sent off as Welbeck was one on one with the keeper and only six yards out. As the ESPN commentators said during the game, – “If that was not a goal scoring opportunity, nothing will ever be”.
Shock Of The Round: Blackburn 3-1 Fulham
Steve Keanai??i??s men had already pulled off one miracle in the season by winning at Old Trafford, but their win against Fulham was nothing short of another one. After going down to 10 men and their best and most prolific striker sent off, no one would have given them a chance to get anything out of the game. But they had other ideas as they fought hard in every area of the pitch and went on to win the game deservedly and move out of the drop zone.
