Nearly a decade ago, Ken Bates, Chelseaai??i??s former owner, was on the cusp of selling the club he bought for just A?1 in 1982. Batesai??i?? affair with Chelsea might look like a love-hate relationship at times but with a A?80 million debt sitting on their heads, Bates knew that it was time to let go.
In came Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. The business tycoon from the city of Saratov expressed his interest in purchasing Chelsea but hadnai??i??t yet put pen to paper as yet. The 2002/03 season was slowly coming to an end but this time Chelsea were doing better than finishing in the top six. They had a good chance of finishing in the top four. However, there was an obstacle in their path ai??i?? Liverpool.
The Reds and the Blues were equal on points prior to the final game of the season and what better way to settle a guaranteed birth in Europe than have these two battle it out for it? Managers Claudio Ranieri and Gerard Houllier were sending out their best eleven for nothing less than a win. People thronged Stamford Bridge in anticipation, anxiety and excitement and the game was played in abundance of these factors.
If there was any calm before the storm, it was in the first nine minutes. Enter tenth minute, Liverpool earned a free kick on the left side of Chelseaai??i??s half, a few yards ahead of the halfway line. Danny Murphy was incumbent of set pieces back in the time and as soon as the referee pointed to the free kick spot, it was a clear assembly by the Liverpool team. It was almost as if they had rehearsed this time and again on the training ground. Murphy whipped in a curler on Alan Wileyai??i??s whistle, aiming straight for the far post. As part of the Chelsea marking detached, it was just Milan Baros and captain Sami Hyypia going for the header. Emmanuel Petit misjudged the path of the incoming ball, switching off in a matter of seconds hence allowing Hyypia to take advantage and go for the header. Liverpool drew first blood; one step into Champions League the following season.
However, happiness was short-lived in the Liverpool camp. Just a minute later, Chelsea executed a copy of Hyypiaai??i??s goal. A Le Saux corner was cleared towards Baros who got a heavy touch on the ball, allowing it to glide towards Le Saux who came back in towards the byline. Le Saux gave a feather touch pass to Danish midfielder Jesper Gronkjaer who wasted little time in forwarding the ball as a cross into the Chelsea box. At the point Gronkjaer receives the ball, the Chelsea backline who came front for the initial corner turned 180 degrees and Marcel Desailly was the lucky one to meet the end of Gronkjaerai??i??s cross. Claudio Ranieri, who was staring down the UEFA Cup barrel till that equalizer was ignited with hope as Chelsea refused to be pushed back.
The Blues were not done yet. The urgency to get the upper hand in this game spurred Chelsea to apply pressure for the second goal. Finally, their efforts paid off in the 26th minute when Gronkjaer received the ball via a Melchiot throw-in on the right flank. Standing at the edge of the box, Gronkjaer quickly turned with the ball in an attempt to cut into the box. Having gotten away from Riise, Gronkjaer noticed that an incoming Djimi Traore means he cannot continue anymore. Gronkjaer then went for a low-rise curler towards the far left as Traore slipped and fell short of the Dane. Chelsea were back in the lead. Liverpoolai??i??s hopes were slowly edged off the Bridge. The two teams went into the break with 2-1 to Chelsea at home.
The second half showed a little more rush than the first with Eidur Gudjohnsen and Michael Owen missing sitters for their respective teams. Even Steven Gerrard tried to pick something out of his long-range armoury but failed. Chelsea were given a scare in the 77th minute when the assistant referee called for handball against Milan Baros after the striker scored thanks to a Carlo Cudicini error. Liverpool still didnai??i??t get that equalizer.
But one of the key highlights of the game was Steven Gerrardai??i??s sending off. Having already picked a yellow for an earlier challenge, Liverpoolai??i??s No.17 went in for a harsh challenge on Grame Le Saux, getting his knee instead. This was the final act of drama that destroyed Liverpoolai??i??s Champions League hopes for the following year. Chelsea on the other hand, were saved not only from the UEFA Cup but a place in the group stages of the Champions League guaranteed A?10 million.
It was all working out for Ken Bates as he didnai??i??t have to do much to woo a young Roman Abramovich who was now convinced of the potential returns an investment in the Premier League, and Chelsea could make. Although the likes of Zola, Jody Morris and Graeme Le Saux left the squad in the summer, the Russian money brought in the likes of Crespo, Makelele, Mutu, Veron, Joe Cole, Damien Duff and many more as a complete makeover took the Blues to the second spot, behind only the ai???Invinciblesai??i?? of Arsenal. With this began the start of a beautiful relationship between Abramovich and Chelsea.
However, one would wonder, what if Chelsea lost the last game against Liverpool? Would Roman have changed his mind? If he did, where would Chelsea be today?
