After Andre Villas-Boas was fired, Chelsea promoted his deputy to the post of manager until the end of season, certainly not beyond that. Who’d have thought that the man would go on to revitalize a demoralized squad to such an extent that they go on to capture not just the FA Cup, but also the Champions League for the first time in the history of the club? Who’d have given this man a snowball’s chance in hell of forging an unbreakable team with a dozen broken spirits? No matter what fate threw at them, his team would not lose. Such was his magic. Chelsea became the champions of Europe, in a season they were least expected to. Yet, the seemingly inevitable managerial firing at Chelsea has happened.
With utter disregard to what that triumph meant for the club and its fans, and how much ChelseaAi??benefited from the win in Munich, the club’s hierarchy had clearly set their hearts on someone else; perhaps someone who was on a sabbatical. Furthermore, a Champions League-winning manager wasn’t as easy to dispose of as, say Avram Grant. That the man in question was a darling of the terraces further forced their hand. Reluctantly, the reins were handed over to Roberto di Matteo in the summer. The finger, however, remained on the trigger. The chapter was to be closed at the first available opportunity.
Three losses, two draws in the last five games, is all it took for the manager to lose his job. It’s not to say that he didn’t have flaws. At times, he appeared tactically limited. He had one favored system, that of deploying a 4-2-3-1 formation and he religiously stuck to that. He changed players, made attacking and defensive substitutions, but never moved beyond said formation. In a similar setup, a defensive, counter-attacking Chelsea led by Didier Drogba up-front conquered Europe last season. They mostly took the field as underdogs, played to their strengths by maintaining their shape and hitting on the counter, and hit they certainly did.
This season, however, they were expected to change their style of play. Flamboyant players were signed to further the cause, but veterans either departed (Drogba), were injured (Lampard) or unavailable (Terry). The manager was remarkably short of cover in central midfield and at centre-forward all along. To make Chelsea offensively competitive and creatively adept, he couldn’t help but play all his attacking players together in the third band and sacrifice defensive cover on the flanks.
Howsoever brilliant Mata, Hazard and Oscar were, together they left the full-backs exposed and Chelsea were always vulnerable to attacks from wide areas of the pitch. Playing game after game, even in domestic cup games, the young guns were left fatigued. Didier Drogba would have wrecked teams had he received the kind of service these playmakers provided. Had Drogba stayed or had Chelsea signed even an average centre-forward in the summer, the manager’s fate might have been very different. It’s unfair to judge Roberto’s tactics, as there wasn’t a lot that he could have done differently.
The timing of this decision makes little sense, even by Chelsea standards. Their Champions League fate is out of their hand; it’s not like the new manager can have any say in how Shakhtar play against Juventus. In the Premier League, they are currently third in the table, four points behind leaders Manchester City, with the champions due at Stamford Bridge this weekend. So potentially the gap could have been cut down to a solitary point. To truly judge the manager as fairly as he deserved to be, the board should have waited until the January window, signed a striker and then taken a call in the summer. By then, Pep Guardiola, who’s widely believed to be Roman Abramovich’s first choice target, would also have been available. The fans could have still lived with such a transition, had it come to that.Ai??To the utter disbelief of fans still reeling worldwide after the first announcement, ChelseaAi??announced that Rafa Benitez had taken over from Roberto di Matteo. Rafa Benitez may be able to improve Chelsea on the pitch in the short term, adding a bit of tacticalAi??flexibility into the mix, but eventually what good is any shape, any strategy, any game plan unless someone puts the ball into the back of the net? Ergo, reinforcements he shall also ask for. Benitez isn’t known to be good at man-management; in fact, he’s awful at it. The single most important thing di Matteo did was to unify the dressing room. He knew what it meant to play for this football club, he understood the fans. He often spoke to players individually, and knew how to bring out the best in them. Before the Champions League final in Munich, he prepared a video, wherein friends and family of the players wished them luck before they took the field against Bayern Munich. He knew how to inspire them.
Rafa Benitez is clearly despised by the Chelsea fans since his Liverpool days. They’d chanted against his appointment the last time he was linked to the club, and may continue to do so now that he’s actually taken over the reins. There’s a lingering feeling that this appointment has something to do with Fernando Torres; that he has been brought in to still reinvigorate the player. Chelsea’s management couldn’t be further from reality or more disconnected from the fans. Where a player had to be sold, a manager has been sacked. Where losses had to be cut, hearts have been broken.
