Barclays Premier League is nearing its conclusion and the shackles have been removed as goals went in thick and fast. THT reviews the major talking points of this weekend’s action and their impact on the clubs’ fortunes.
Barclays Premier league went goal crazy as clubs up and down the division scrambled for points in a bid to fulfil their season ambitions. With just two rounds of games to go, the league is tantalizingly poised, Wolves are gone but two more from Bolton, QPR, Blackburn and possibly Wigan and Villa could join them. The Manchester Derby this Monday could settle the issue as far as the league crown is concerned although a draw could keep it going for another week or so.
The drama for the Champions league spot intensified as London clubs Spurs & Chelsea staked their claims with impressive home wins against relegation threatened Blackburn and QPR. Arsenal earned a crucial point at Stoke but Newcastle were hammered by the unbelievably outstanding Wigan at the DW. As things stand Arsenal look firm favourites to grab that all important third place with two winnable games (Norwich (H), West Brom (A)).
However, the fourth spot still remains as wide open as ever but the fixture list seems kind for the other North London club as well. With the trips to relegation candidates Bolton and Aston Villa on their agenda next followed by the visit of Martin Jolai??i??s Cottagers, on paper at least the Lily whites should do enough, but stranger things have happened especially when it comes down to Spurs. The midweek clash between Chelsea and Newcastle could prove pivotal for the destiny of both clubs and all important final UCL spot. Although if Chelsea do go on to win the European Cup out right then the fourth place becomes inconsequential.
Wigan & Everton: End Of Season Wonders, Again
For Wigan, we can proudly say we saw that coming. Their annual Houdini act has become all too familiar to be just a mere coincidence anymore. It all started after their brilliant second half display against Spurs, a game they lost. However, the manager and the players took heart from their battling display and have since gone strength to strength; in fact they have done more than just that. Their jaw dropping run has included scalps such as Liverpool at Anfield, United at DW, Arsenal at Emirates and this weekend dismantling the hitherto brilliant Magpies.

However, their recent surge makes one wonder what the reason could be; essentially the set of players remains the same but they play like men possessed like never before. Credit to Martinez for his brilliant fire fighting skills and if they do manage to save Premier League status yet again, it would be largely down to the managerai??i??s perseverance in an approach he has championed for season long.
Everton are no different, although they wake up a few months earlier but last few weeks have been astonishingly brilliant. Twelve goals in their last three outings means the Toffees have now banged in more than 25% of their league season tally in only three games. The major reason for this sudden proficiency in front of the goal has to be the January acquisition of Jelavic and with him finding his feet in the English game, David Moyesai??i??s side’s perennial bugbear is no more theirAi??Achilles’ heel.
However, this is not the tale for just this season as time and again, Everton’s end-season form has made pundits talk about their chance of finishing in European places in the next season but alas, they are just a different team from August to December.
Everton currently sit ahead of their fierce rivals Liverpool and although the Reds too won comprehensively this weekend, the Everton faithful might yet get to brag come the end of the season.Ai?? The race for Merseyside supremacy is poised on a knife edge.
Teams with Everton and Wigan in their run up are having nightmares as the likes of United and Newcastle would testify.
Tale Of Mid Table Security And Taking The Foot Off The Pedal
The mid-table teams have nothing to fight for at the fag end of the season and that is clearly visible in their approach. Teams like Stoke, Norwich and Swansea have made themselves name for their battling qualities this season but somehow that quality has been missing from them ever since their top flight status has been secured.
Norwich, just like in their game against the Citizens, looked woefully dull and without motivation against Liverpool and that was highlighted in all the goals that they conceded. While Gerrard rightfully takes the credit for his closing down in the build-up to the first goal, the truth was that the Norwich players showed great slackness at the back which caused them to give the ball away cheaply for all the three goals.
Swansea, who like Norwich have been very good at home this season, also let a three goal lead slip to only manage a draw against a relegated Wolves side. While questions were asked about Rodgersai??i?? switch to aAi?? 3-4-3 system for the game, it was really his playersai??i?? loss in concentration that led to conceding easy goals which helped Connorai??i??s men stage a comeback. The Welsh side have usually played a possession game brilliantly after going ahead but it was all too different on Saturday as the players were often guilty of giving the ball away and were not as tight at the back as they have been all through the season. Such a bad game cannot be discounted as a minor-blip as the reason is there for all to see.
Stoke followed the same protocol as the above teams as they were not their usual self against the Gunners against whom they have relished playing at the Britannia stadium. The physical presence, no doubt, was there but it was no where near what the teams expect when they go to Stokeai??i??s home ground. In fact, Arsenal conceded more fouls and picked up more bookings than the home side which really tells the whole story about Stokeai??i??s game. What was even more significant was that the crowd was also not at their vocal best but that had more to do with the teamai??i??s performance than their celebratory attitude about securing survival for next season.
Football Supporters, Too Partisan For Their Own Good
Stoke are renowned for their noisy home support and their pride in ai???playing like the wantai???, which is fair enough. However, whatai??i??s not fair is their constant booing of young Aaron Ramsey; he was the victim if the entire Shawcross-Ramsey saga had one. Why taunt a player for getting his snapped into two? The treatment handed to Arsene Wenger was foolish as well and Wengerai??i??s press conference put the fans in their rightful place.

At Stamford Bridge too Anton Ferdinand was at the receiving end of some jibes, unwarranted and totally uncalled for. They say every club has their set of idiots; will anyone take the lead and stop this nonsense then?

Steve Kean for England was chanted at White Hart Lane during the game between Rovers and Spurs, although not sure which set of supporters were the ones making the noise, we donai??i??t really need to know either.
