In the first part of this series, we looked at how the game of football came to the great nation of Italy, discovered the reason how the name Calcio came into being and also unearthed the contributions of a certain Englishman, who had a huge hand in shaping the embryonic years of Calcio ai??i?? William Garbutt. As we continue with our trip down memory lane, we look into the rise of violence in football matches in Italy and also talk about the very first scandal in Calcio.
Violence in football is commonplace nowadays but it has been kept under check mainly due to the countless rules and regulations imposed by FIFA. Football in Italy was violent from its very onset. What started off as a simple pitch-invasion soon would snowball into a stone fight, where either the players or the referee or the supporters or all three would get hurt. One form of violence which was prevalent was pitch invasion. Sometimes it was done just to be a part of the winning team, to hug the player who scored a goal. Other times, it would not be too pretty, as angry fans often chased down a player or a referee to the locker room.
Pitch Invasion
Rinaldo Balrassina, one of the first three Italian referees to have officiated in World Cup, was subjected to stone-throwing from supporters, a very common form of violence in the early years, when he refused to give a penalty. One of the most famous incidents involving pitch invasion can be traced back to a match between Lucca and Viareggio. Relations had soured between these two clubs and in the return fixture, it embroiled into an uncontrollable situation. An argument over a decision between a Lucca player and the referee turned worse, as the players on the pitch took the matter into their own ai???handsai??i??.

A fistfight followed and it got so intense that the military police had to rescue the travelling players. Augustus Morganti, a local hero was officiating as a linesman and in the heat of the moment, a military police shot him from point-blank range. This brought about a furious reaction from the supporters and things turned really serious.
Guns were acquired and railway lines were blocked. Electricity and telephone lines were disabled as the Lucca players managed to escape by the skin of their teeth. The quiet town turned into a war zone as local anarchists took control. Normalcy did come after a couple of days, but it left an indelible mark on the history of Calcio.
The 1920ai??i??s were a time for Italy when the changing nature of the political scenario of the country was reflected on the football pitch. A notable example of such was Aldo Milano, a Pro Vercelli player and an Italy international.
The Plight of Aldo Milano
Milano the third, as he was called was not only a Pro Vercelli regular, but also was a militant fascist to boot. The War had divided Italy into two parts and each claimed that they had the right to lead the nation; it was indeed sad to see players like Milano get involved in the scheme of things. Story goes that one night, Aldo was helping a group of Vercelli fascists, who were to remove a plaque, which was widely seen as an insult to those who have died in the War. In the darkness of the night, two patrolling guards shot at them and mortally wounded Aldo.

The next part is shrouded with controversy; nonetheless its true to some extent. After he was shot, there were various reports of what happened later that night. Some claim that he was taken to the hospital, while others suggest that his body was left there on the street all night. Which of these versions is true is lost in the pages of history, but one thing was left for all to see ai??i?? how the political alliances had killed a player in his prime.
Pro Vercelli were naturally furious at this killing and wanted to withdraw the team from the Championship. On the other hand, fascists from Vercelli turned his death into a political one ai??i?? claiming that he was a brave soldier, who died defending what he believed in. Between these two extremes, no one realized that slowly but surely, politics was infiltrating the game of Calcio. The game was being molded on one hand by the likes of William Garbutt and on the other by the ever-changing political and cultural hegemony.
Pro Vercelli ai??i?? The Legendary Club
One of the earliest clubs from the peninsula, Pro Vercelli was formed by players mostly coming from the region of Vercelli. Their strong connections with the locals not only made them popular, but also well-known in the country. A team comprising solely of locals was a treat to watch and wherever they played, they managed to stir up a nationalist feeling. At that time, the rice-growing town produced players, who would not only take the region by storm, but also had as many as nine players in the Italian national team.

Their practice matches were watched by legions of fans and they were the first-ever team, who focused on possession play, a term unheard of in those days. Simply booting the ball up the field was not an option for them, as they also focused on their youth program more than any other club at that time. So dominant were they during those years that the national team even adorned their club ai???jerseyai??i?? while playing for Italy.
Their marauding run towards glory began with the 1908 Championship, which they won by defeating Juventus. Pro Vercelli repeated their feat the next year, as they emerged champions yet again, playing their way through some tricky fixtures and most of the times on hostile territories. Such was their domination that they never lost a game in those two years. In the 1909 final, they defeated Internazionale, which went by the name of U.S. Milanese in those days.
1909-10 Championship ai??i?? the First ai???Theftai??i??
After two years of domination, the Lions from Vercelli met their first defeat in the 1909-10 Championship. Inspite of losing three games, they racked up points and also goals. At the end of the tournament, Internazionale and Pro Vercelli were tied on points but Vercelli had a superior goal-difference. Under normal rules, Pro Vercelli had won the Championship, but the dark forces at play denied them the taste of victory.
However, the football administrators (FIGC) ai???orderedai??i?? a playoff to decide the eventual winners, that too on a day when most of the Pro Vercelli players would be occupied in a military tournament. Faced with an acrimonious decision, Pro Vercelli first lodged a protest, which was overturned. Then they appealed to reschedule the match, which too was surprisingly denied. Whether Internazionale had a hand in scheduling the playoff is not known for sure, but at that time it surely appeared something rotten was going on inside the corridors of power.

Furious and appalled, Pro Vercelli decided to teach FIGC a lesson and as a mark of protest, fielded their fourth team comprising mostly of 11 to 14 year old youngsters. Needless to say, Internazionale won 10-3 on that day and claimed their first ever Scudetto. Despite the huge margin of defeat, the youth team managed to score three past Internazionale, a feat that is not only rare but also quite impossible. FIGC was not amused by this protest from Vercelli and after initially deciding to ban them, allowed them to play.
The next three years, Pro Vercelli were almost untouchable as things went back to normalcy. Three back-to-back Scudettos followed in 1910-11, 1911-12 and 1912-13. Such was their domination that they lost only twice during these years. In 1911, they won 75% of their matches, which they bettered in 1912, winning 83% of the total. Their domination reached its zenith in 1913, where they won 90% of their matches in an absolutely flawless season.
However, Pro Vercelli failed to hold on to their players, as they were lured away by bigger clubs. The most important player to emerge from Vercelli was the legendary Silvio Piola, and after his departure to Lazio, the team plunged into an eternal darkness from where they have not escaped till date.
