1.Ai??Seagulls face daunting trip to St Maryai??i??s
Five points clear at the top of the table, 8 home league wins from 8, 17 straight successes at home, life couldnai??i??t get any better for Nigel Adkinsai??i?? Southampton. On Saturday, South Coast rivals Brighton and Hove Albion have the unenviable task of travelling to fortress St Maryai??i??s. So, what do Gus Poyetai??i??s side need to do to stop the Saints juggernaut?
With the finishing prowess of the star striker Rickie Lambert, the creativity and guile of Adam Lallana and the ability to score goals from midfield through Brazilian Guly Do Prado, the Saints have scored the most goals (36) in the division, with 21 of those coming at home. As for the visitors, after an impressive start to the season, Brighton have gone off the boil, dropping to 10th, 13 points behind the Saints. On the road so far this season, they have a mixed record having both won and lost three games, whilst conceding as many as they have scored(7).
With his own sideai??i??s patchy form in his mind, Poyet could adopt a defensive philosophy in the hope of frustrating the Saints. But thatai??i??s a risky ploy, as a moment of brilliance from one of Southamptonai??i??s star men or a defensive mistake would ruin the plan. Instead, Poyet may be better served by taking on Southampton at their own game. With the likes of Craig Mackail-Smith, Ashley Barnes and Craig Noone at his disposal, attack may be the best form of defence for the Seagulls.
2.Ai??Bluebirds seek revenge
Saturday sees a repeat of one of last seasonai??i??s play-off semi-finals as Reading entertain Cardiff City. Following a 0-0 draw at the Madjeski Stadium in the first leg, Cardiff were favourites to book a place in what would have been an all-Welsh final against bitter rivals Swansea City.Ai??However, a calamitous mistake from keeper Stephen Bywater allowed Shane Long to put the visitors in the lead, a lead they would never relinquish on their way to a 3-0 win.
Six months on, an inconsistent start to the season sees Brian McDermottai??i??s men sit in mid-table. Their visitors on the other hand sit in fourth position and come into the game high on confidence. New Bluebirdsai??i?? boss Malky Mackayai??i??s much changed side have won 4 of their last 5 games,Ai?? including a 2-0 win over high-flying Crystal Palace last time out. Is the revenge on the cards?
3.Ai??Michael who?
Following the departure of Steve Cotterill to Nottingham Forest last month, Portsmouth have been on the lookout for a new boss. With the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Steve Coppell, Ray Wilkins, Eddie Howe and Sean Oai??i??Driscoll linked to the post, there was excitement as the Pompey crows waited for their new man to be announced. However, when it did get announced, the appointment of Michael Appleton was greeted by many as ai???Michael Who?ai???.
An outsider for the job, Appleton has left his role as assistant to West Brom boss Roy Hodgson, to sign a 3-and-a-half year contract at Fratton Park. A former Manchester United youngster, Appleton spent most of his career at Preston North End, before moving to West Brom where injury curtailed his playing days. He moved into coaching roles with the Baggies, impressing alongside Hodgson. Portsmouth will be his first stint as a manager.
With the Pompey faithful undecided about the appointment, Appleton will be hoping to win some of the fans over whenAi?? his new side travel to Watford on Saturday.
4.Ai??Who will be the next star linked to Doncaster?
Already Pascal Chimbonda, Herita Ilunga and El Hadji Diouf have been captured, with the latter netting twice last time out as Ipswich Town were defeated 3-1. Other arrivals are expected with Real Madrid midfielder Mahamadou Diarra entering advanced negotiations with the club. Only this week, ex-Arsenal star Robert Pires revealed on his Twitter account that he had rejected a move to Rovers, saying ai???Iai??i??m happy they think I can help them, but itai??i??s not my plan to play thereai???.
So, whoai??i??s the next big name to be linked? With McKay having orchestrated moves for stars such as Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Ronaldinho, it is anyoneai??i??s guess!
5.Ai??Blues have chance to catch-up
Following last yearai??i??s stunning Carling Cup success, Birmingham City are enjoying a successful Europa League campaign. However, European involvement on a Thursday night means they have been unable to fulfil their Championship midweek fixtures meaning they have three games in hand on many of their rivals. Having collected a respectable 21 points from 13 games, you would expect the Blues to be sitting comfortably in the table, but their lack of games means they lie in a false position of 13th.
However, they have a chance to improve this in the next 7 days. On Saturday, they host Peterborough United, whilst Tuesday evening sees one of their games in hand as Burnley travel to St Andrews. Maximum points from both games would see Birmingham make a significant move towards the promotion places.
6.Ai??Foxes return for Pearson
On Sunday, Nigel Pearson will start his second stint as Leicester City boss when they host Crystal Palace. Between 2008 and 2010, Pearson led the Foxes to the League One title, before reaching the Championship play-offs the season after. In 2010, Pearsonai??i??s strained relationship with chairman Milan Mandaric led to the former Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough defender departure to Hull City.
He led the Tigers to an 11th place finish last season, whilst they currently sit 9th, only a point behind the play-off places. But following Sven Goran-Erikssonai??i??s departure from the King Power Stadium, the lure of a return to the Foxes proved too much for Pearson. Foxes fans will be hoping Pearson enjoys just as much success second time around.
7.Ai??Barmby takes first steps on managerial ladder
In 2004, Barmby moved to his hometown club, who at that time were in League One side. In 7 years, he has played over 180 games for the Tigers as they reached the Premier League. Now aged 37, he is still an important member of the Hull playing squad and at the start of the season, took on a player-coach role. Following Pearsonai??i??s resignation, Hull have rewarded Barmby by given him his first managerial role, initially as player-caretaker manager but with a view to a permanent role. Barmbyai??i??s first task as boss is a trip to Pride Park to face Derby County.
8.Ai??Jonjo Mc-Shelvey?
Liverpool youngster Jonjo Shelvey has already made an instant impression whilst on-loan at Blackpool. With the arrivals of Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson at Anfield, Kenny Dalglish allowed the 19-year old to gain invaluable experience with a spell at Ian Hollowayai??i??s side.
After scoring on his debut, the England Under-21 has netted a further 4 goals in six games, including a hat-trick in a 5-0 demolition of Leeds United. His impressive form has not gone unnoticed, with the likes of Wolves linked with a January swoop for the midfielderai??i??s services, although Liverpool boss Dalglish is known to rate Shelvey highly. It is not just at club level that Shelvey is wanted.
Uncapped at senior level with England, the fact that Shelveyai??i??s father was born in Scotland means the midfielder is eligible to play for the Scots. National boss Craig Levein has already informed Shelvey of his desire for the midfielder to switch his allegiances. Shelvey can further enhance his growing reputation as 5th place Blackpool visit 3rd place Middlesbrough.

9.Ai??Can Sam Baldock find the net again?
Following his move from MK Dons at the end of August, Sam Baldock has settled well into life at West Ham United. After making his debut as a sub on 17th September, the 22 year-old striker has established himself in Sam Allardyce’s starting line-up. He notched up his firstAi??two Hammers’ goals against Blackpool on 15th October 2011. Baldock has nettedAi??a further 3 goals in 5 games as West Ham have moved into second place. A trip to struggling Coventry City on Saturday represents a perfect opportunity for Baldock to continue his fine form.
10.Ai??A fitting tribute for Claretai??i??s legend Jimmy Adamson
Last week, Burnley legend Jimmy Adamson sadly passed away. In his 17-year playing career, Adamson was a one-club man, making 486 appearances for the Clarets. As he embarked on a coaching career, Adamson assisted then England manager Walter Winterbottom in the 1962 World Cup, before turning down the chance to succeed Winterbottom as national boss, a decision which allowed Sir Alf Ramsey to become manager and go on to win the 1966 World Cup.
Adamson instead worked as coach at Burnley before taking over as boss in 1970. After six years in charge, he moved on to manage Sparta Rotterdam and Sunderland, before he finished his time in football by managing Leeds United for two years in the late 1970ai??i??s. Fittingly, Saturday sees Burnley face Leeds at Turf Moor.
