Manchester Unitedai??i??s Corner: 10 Most Memorable Goals Of The Alex Ferguson Era

fergie(c)sheetudeep.com

He came, he saw and he conquered. Fergusonai??i??s dynasty at Old Trafford is days away from running into its 25th year.Ai?? The Scotsman is undoubtedly the most celebrated manager in the history of the club and that in itself is a phenomenal achievement bearing in mind that Sir Matt Busby once anchored these shores. Separating the two colossal figures in Manchester Unitedai??i??s history is a job in vanity. While Sir Matt was the pioneer, Sir Alex has continued in his footsteps and led United into a league of its own.

Sir Alex & Sir Matt - The twin towers of Man United!

.

It was just another November day whenAi??Ron Atkinson, the then United manager, was shown the door and in his place walked in Alex Ferguson. Manchester United ai??i?? a club steeped in history and prominence but sinceAi??ages living in the memories of their past glories finally awakened as Ferguson brought back the much neededAi??fight and the desire to be the absolute best.

However, over the course of Fergieai??i??s 25 years at helm, there have been more than a few hiccups on the way and his place in the hot seat has been questioned. Nevertheless, Ferguson has answered the call of duty every single time, be it good fortune or even divine intervention, Alex Ferguson and Manchester United have somehow got over the line.

Ferguson has overseen more than 1400 games as the pied piper of the Red Army. All through these years, through moments of untold triumph and excruciating despair, Man United and Sir Alex have never wavered and the bond is as strong as ever.

Itai??i??s a herculean task to narrow down the most memorable goals under the ai???Fergie ai??i??eraai??i??; for the record, United have scored over 2500 goals during the Scotsmanai??i??s tenure so far and itai??i??s fair to say more than a thousand would be in the brilliant category.

We, at TheHardTackle, nominate the following for top ten most memorable goals of the Alex Ferguson era. Which of these would you pick as the most important?

Mark RobinsAi??(v Nottingham Forest)

1990 F.A Cup 3rd Round

Ferguson, since arriving in 1986, was yet to win anything, although the gaffer was doing a stellar job behind the scenes by revolutionizing the youth set up. However, fans needed results on the pitch.

Another squad overhaul took place as Neil Webb, Mike Phelan, Gary Pallister, Paul Ince, Danny Wallace and Les Sealey all moved to Old Trafford. Yet the Old Trafford club continued to struggle. Four games were lost by the end of September, including a 5-1 hammering by Manchester City . The pressure on the manager was intense as fans’ discontent was visible. It is famously said Fergusonai??i??s job was on the line, had he failed to get past Nottingham forest, the course of history would be very different.

Mark Robbins popped up with a winner late on and has since been credited with the title of the man who saved Fergieai??i??s job. No one knows for sure what would have transpired had United lost. Martin Edwards – the then United chairman – might have succumbed to the fan pressure. Thankfully, though, he didnai??i??t have to choose; United won the tie and went on to win the F.A. Cup ai??i?? the first of many trophies under Sir Alexai??i??s stewardship.

Steve BruceAi??(v Sheffield Wednesday)

1993 Premier League

26 years had passed since the Old Trafford club could proclaim themselves the Champions of England, a generation awaited their moment of salvation. The league had slipped out of Unitedai??i??s grasp the previous season and worse, bitter rivals Leeds were crowned champions. Ferguson was determined to break the jinx but once again things looked to be getting away at the final frontier. After Sheffield Wednesday had taken the lead, Steve Bruce equalized in the dying moments of regulation time. It looked for all money, United were about to drop two vital points.

But history was made that fateful afternoon at Old Trafford as Bruce rose for one final time and headed home the winner deep into injury time. Absolute pandemonium inside Old Trafford as the crowd went berserk. Legendary scenes of assistant manager Brian Kidd jumping up and down and over the Old Trafford turf followed, in what can only be described as once in a life time experience. Salvation for United and Ferguson as the title returned home after 26 years of pain and gut wrenching agony.

.

Eric CantonaAi??(v Newcastle United)

1996 Premier League

Newcastle were the team to beat that season and going into this must-win game at St. James Park, United were four points behind and having already played a game more. Man United couldnai??i??t afford to lose further ground as Kevin Keeganai??i??s Toon Army came charging out and dominated their rivals from the outset. Peter Schmeichel kept his side in the game and kept denying Les Ferdinand time and again. The whole team pulled together and refused to get beaten. The Old Trafford club grew into the game and when Cantona drilled his volley into the Newcastle net, fans knew their spirit would carry the Red Devils through.

Kevin Keeganai??i??s side lost the game and the momentum in the title chase. The melt down that followed remains one of the most famous sound bites in world football. The kids won the league while Kevin Keeganai??i??s men couldnai??i??t handle the pressure.

.

Eric CantonaAi??(v Liverpool)

1996 F.A. Cup Final

ai???You donai??i??t win anything with kidsai???- Alan Hansen. Yes, you do! Man United and Sir Alex went on toAi??win the double and silenced every critic and pundit who had written them off after the opening day annihilation at the hands of Villa. After winning the league, United arrived in the Cup final to take on arch rivals Liverpool. Defeat wouldnai??i??t be tolerated as Ferguson was determined to launch an era of Unitedai??i??s dominance like never seen before.

The game seemed to be meandering towards extra time as both teams couldnai??i??t be separated. With five minutes to go, Eric Cantona ai??i?? Unitedai??i??s knight in shining armor delivered a famous volley that found a gap in the Liverpool defense as David James was a beaten man in goal. The double was achieved yet again, this timeAi??with a bunch of youngsters promoted from the youth system and the King Cantona, the rest of the premiership could only look on in disbelief.

.

Ryan GiggsAi??(v Arsenal)

1999 F.A. Cup Semi Final

One of the most decorated goals of Unitedai??i??s illustrious history and perhaps, one of the most inspiring. The goal epitomized everything Man United stood for that season – never know when they are beaten. United and Arsenal – easily the best two teams in the country – had slugged it out for more than ninety minutes and yet couldnai??i??t be separated. This was days after the two teams couldnai??i??t beat each other in the first of the encounter and thus, needed a replay.

Ten-man United had done enough to force a shoot out it seemed, but Ryan Giggs had other ideas. The Welsh wizard intercepted a weak Patrick Vieira pass down the left wing and began his epic run.Ai?? Surrounded by four Arsenal shirts, there seemed no way he could make any inroads towards the Gunnerai??i??s goal. But Giggsy found a way where none seemed to exist as did United every single time that season. That goal has been played over and over again but no one will ever get tired of watching it that one more time, although Arsenal faithful might disagree.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (v Bayern Munich)

1999 UEFA Champions League Final

Undoubtedly, the most cherished moment in Unitedai??i??s history, as the baby-faced assassin etched his name in Old Trafford folklore by scoring the winning goal in the European cup final and thereby ending the 30-year long wait for the prestigious European crown. Fergieai??i??s ‘Holy Grail’ achieved and his legendary status guaranteed.

Everything surrounding that game seems like a dream for Red Devils around the world and sure makes the hair on the back of the neck stand up reminiscing those magical three minutes of injury time.

ai???Can Manchester United score? They always score? ai???- claimed Clive Tyldesley famously from the commentary box. Teddy Sherigham brought parity and United fans started believing. Tyldesley followed it up with another memorable sound bite: “Is this their moment? Beckham… into Sheringham… and SolskjAi??r has won it!”

For the sheer drama and coming back from the brink, that moment will perhaps never be bettered. United had no right wining the European Cup in the way they did, it seemed unfair on the Germans but somehow it all seemed rather inevitable that unforgettable night at the Camp Nou.

.

Paul Scholes (v Barcelona)

2008 Champions League Semi-Final Second Leg

Nine years on since that memorable night in Barcelona, Fergieai??i??s United side had failed to deliver on the continent. The fiftiethAi??anniversary of the Munich air crash was the right time to set the record straight. However beating Spanish giants Barca wasnai??i??t going to be easy and after the stalemate in the first leg at Camp Nou, the two heavy weights resumed hostility at Old Trafford.

In a game studded with star names, Xavi, Ineista, Messi, Deco, Etoai??i??o, Ronaldo et al, it was Old Traffordai??i??s very own Ginger prince who provided the most telling blow. Scholes struck a sweet right-footed shot from more than 20 yards that flew past Victor Valdes and Old Trafford cheered in unison. It was one of the most memorable European nights at the Theatre of Dreams as fans symbolized the United spirit. Barcelona couldnai??i??t respond and United reached their first European final since 99.

.

Fredrico Macheda (v Aston Villa)

2010 Premier League

Rafa Benitez and Liverpool had finally managed to put up a title challenge and Fergusonai??i??s side was starting to fumble. The previous weekend Fulham had further dented Red Devils title aspirations and Unitedai??i??s talisman Wayne Rooney was also dismissed and hence suspended.Ai?? ai???Are you watching Manchester?’Ai??was the call from Merseyside, as number 18 seemed to be slipping away from Fergieai??i??s grasp.

Villa lead United as the game entered its final 10 minutes of regulation time. Cristiano Ronaldo brought United level and Old Trafford was alive again. But surely Villa werenai??i??t going to concede another. Ferguson threw an unknown Italian striker in the form of Macheda into the deep end and it could only be divine intervention that the teenager turned out to be the match winner.

With time almost up and fans barely able to watch, Kiko turned inside the box swiveled and delivered a curling finish past the brilliant Brad Freidel. What a moment for the debutant – to score an important winner in front of the Stretford End deep into injury times is stuff only dreams are made of. Machedaai??i??s goal lifted United spirits and United captured the ever so important 18th league title.

.

Michael Owen (v Manchester City)

2010 Premier League

This was proclaimed as “the Derby” that was going to determine the change of power in Manchester. Cityai??i??s billionaire owner had catapulted the Blues among the Premier league elite as United were rebuilding after losing Cristiano Roanldo and Carlos Tevez.

Mark Hughes’ side were unbeaten going into this one and finally seemed to be rising from the shadows of their illustrious neighbors. United led thrice but City pulled it back every time as Craig Bellamy equalized for the Citizenai??i??s late on. Controversially, four minutes of injury time were signaled and in these four minutes, a former Kop legend became a hero at Old Trafford when he scored the most famous derby goal a minute and 36 seconds past the allotted four minutes. United manager, fans and players went crazy as Michael Owenai??i??s winner not only defeated City but also put an end to all those talks of a power shift in Manchester.

.

Javier Hernandez (v Chelsea)

2011 Premier League

Ancelotti lead Chelsea side had wrestled the title away from Old Trafford after United had won it three years on the bounce. The Blues arrived at the Theatre of Dreams sniffing a repeat of last yearai??i??s result where they defeated United at OT to carry home the advantage.

This time though Fergusonai??i??s United didnai??i??t let their guard down. In the quest for their 19th league crown that would eclipse Liverpoolai??i??s record haul, the Red Devils delivered a crucial blow as Hernandez raced on to a Park Ji Sung through ball and scored.

Early on in the game, Chicharito’s strike settled all nerves inside Old Trafford as United dominated their London counterparts. It was a crucial goal that created the sense of belief and inevitability about the impending and most cherished title number 19.

.

Honorable mention must go out to the season 2006-07 during which United scored some of the most memorable goals in their recent history. Be it the John Oai??i??Shea winner at the Kop end, Cristiano Ronaldoai??i??s supreme solo effort at Craven Cottage or Rooneyai??i??s goal at Goodison en-route to a famous comeback from two goals down – all efforts were indeed special in their own right. The famous night against Roma where the Italian giants were decimated 7-1 also comes to mind, as United turned on the style and scored some absolute peaches.

Also to be remembered, a special goal scored by Paul Scholes against Panathinaikos in the Championsai??i?? league group stage 2000-01, one of the most perfect team goals ever scored by United during the Fergie regime capped off by an exquisite Scholes chip.
