Manchester United are exploring a move for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde after manager Hansi Flick raised doubts about the 22-year-old defender’s future at the Catalan club.
According to Sport Witness, citing SPORT, AS, and Mundo Deportivo, the Premier League side are keen to understand whether a transfer is possible, with Flick reportedly uncertain about Balde’s long-term role.
A new midfielder and a left-back remain high on Manchester United’s priorities, with the expected arrival of Carlos Baleba set to address at least one of those needs. Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys also remains under consideration.
The position has been a major concern, though Manchester United are reported to have shelved interest in Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall due to the Magpies’ resistance to any sale.
Why Balde has emerged as a target
Balde came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy and appeared destined to be the club’s first-choice left-back for years to come. He was a regular starter until the second half of last season, when Flick began deploying Joao Cancelo on the left flank.
Cancelo has joined Barcelona permanently after terminating his contract with Al-Hilal this week. His arrival has significantly increased the pressure on Balde, with the latest updates reporting that Flick harbours doubts about the young defender’s future.
Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed Manchester United’s interest, suggesting movement could follow in the coming days. The Premier League giants are attempting to establish whether a deal is feasible and, if so, what Barcelona’s terms would entail.
Although Balde is reportedly content at Barcelona, his reduced playing time since Cancelo’s arrival means he is no longer assured of a starting position. However, his long-standing connection to the club could weigh in favour of staying, even amid the transfer speculation.
Can Manchester United convince Balde to move?
Manchester United’s search for a new defender could work in their favour. If they can guarantee Balde a regular starting role under Michael Carrick, they may be able to convince him to move to Old Trafford. He could prove a significant acquisition should Barcelona agree terms and the player opt to pursue a new challenge in the Premier League.
Balde is understood to be assessing his options alongside agent Jorge Mendes, with a decision expected before the close of the transfer window.
