Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are not optimistic about winning the race for the signature of Real Madrid target Florian Wirtz.
According to a report from Give Me Sport, Manchester City are interested in acquiring the services of Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, but they are not confident about getting a deal over the line. While they are massive admirers of the German international, they have their work cut out.
Wirtz joined Bayer Leverkusen at the start of 2020. While initially, he was a part of their Under-19 side, he got promoted to the senior side just six months down the line. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has only gone from strength to strength since, and he has established himself as one of the best young players in the world.
He played a massive part in Leverkusen’s successful campaign last time around. While multiple top clubs wanted to sign him last summer, Wirtz decided to continue at the club for another year. But, he is unlikely to be around for long as some of the biggest clubs in Europe are after his signature.
Bayern Munich have already been working on a deal to sign him, and they have used the last two years to build a strong relationship with the player’s father which could help their cause. But, Bayer Leverkusen do not want to sell to a direct rival which is a boost for Manchester City and Real Madrid, who have been linked with him of late.
Manchester City are not confident about signing Wirtz
Manchester City have not been at their best this season, and they might even go throphy less. The poor run will lead to a major overhaul ahead of next season. Quite a few of their stars could leave as they look to freshen things up.
Kevin De Bruyne is expected to be on the move, and the Manchester-based club believe Wirtz could be a great long-term replacement for the Belgian playmaker. While Manchester City feel the chance of replacing De Bruyne could lure him, they are still not expecting to win the race for his signature thanks to the competition.
As things stand, the club is believed to be playing catch up with Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the mix. Los Blancos already have a start-studded squad, but they are still on the lookout for players who can further bolster their squad.
Manchester Citywould love to add the £125 million-rated star to their roster and have already held informal talks with the player’s camp. Xabi Alonso, his current boss, is expected to move from Bayer Leverkusen to Real Madrid as Ancelotti’s successor, which could give the Spanish giants an advantage to sign him from the Bundesliga club.
