Tottenham launch tentative move for Leon Bailey

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly compete with Manchester United to sign 27-year-old Jamaican international Leon Bailey from Aston Villa this month.

According to a report by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Leon Bailey is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The North London giants are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit before the winter transfer window shuts down. So, they have “called to be informed” on the Aston Villa attacker’s situation, with Manchester United also keen on signing the 27-year-old winger.

Leon Bailey and is Aston Villa journey

Leon Bailey has been a dependable performer since joining Aston Villa from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2021. While the experienced forward has not been an undisputed first-choice starter throughout his spell with the West Midlands outfit, he has produced many memorable performances in the last three and a half years.

The 27-year-old has turned out nearly 150 times thus far for Aston Villa while chipping in with 21 and 23 assists. However, Bailey’s stock will likely fall after Villa’s winter business, with Marcus Rashford and Donyell Malen arriving at Villa Park. In addition, Marco Asensio is on the verge of joining Aston Villa from Paris Saint-Germain.

So, Bailey might benefit from leaving the West Midlands outfit before Monday’s winter transfer deadline. The Jamaican international does not have a shortage of clubs pursuing his signature, with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Move across the Premier League on the cards?

Manchester United’s interest in Leon Bailey is understandable. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a new attacker after allowing Marcus Rashford to join Aston Villa on loan for the rest of the 2024/25 season. So, the Aston Villa forward has emerged as a viable target for Manchester United, with the Premier League club “calling to be informed”.

The Red Devils have Tottenham alongside them in the same boat, with the North London outfit also making tentative contact over a late move. The Lilywhites have suffered from an injury crisis in the last few months, and they must sign multiple players before the winter transfer window shuts down.

So, Bailey is a viable target for Tottenham, considering his versatility and experience in the Premier League. The 27-year-old Jamaican international should not take long to settle down at Manchester United or Tottenham, although it is unclear if they can convince Aston Villa to sanction his departure.
