Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign 24-year-old English international Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in a deal worth £70 million before Monday’s winter transfer deadline.
According to a report by Sky Sports, Marc Guehi is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea and Newcastle United are keen on signing the Crystal Palace defender in the summer transfer window. However, Tottenham wanted to beat the competition to the English international this month with a bid worth £70 million, which the Eagles have turned down.
The rise and rise of Marc Guehi
Marc Guehi has established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League since joining Crystal Palace from Chelsea in July 2021. The Englishman has gone from strength to strength in the last three and a half years, growing in stature at Selhurst Park by becoming the team’s skipper.
The 24-year-old has turned out nearly 150 times thus far for Crystal Palace, chipping in with eight goals and three assists. Guehi was also an integral member of the squad that reached the UEFA Euro 2024 final. In addition, the player’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of many Premier League bigwigs, including Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur.
A man in demand
Chelsea briefly mulled over a winter move for the English international before the deal failed to see the light of day. With Axel Disasi facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge and Trevoh Chalobah unlikely to remain at the West London club beyond this season, the Blues should invest in a young centre-back. So, the Crystal Palace mainstay is a viable target for Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United attempted to sign Marc Guehi last summer before the deal failed to see the light of day. The continued interest in the Crystal Palace skipper is understandable, considering Lloyd Kelly is on the verge of joining Juventus. In addition, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, and Dan Burn are on the wrong side of 30. So, Guehi is an option worth considering for Newcastle United.
However, Tottenham Hotspur wanted to beat Chelsea and Newcastle United to his signature by launching a bid worth £70 million to seal a winter move. However, the Lilywhites have failed to convince Crystal Palace to part ways with the 24-year-old Englishman. The Eagles have already lost Chalobah in the winter transfer window after Chelsea terminated his loan deal.
Tottenham will likely return with a bid in the summer transfer window. However, after failing to sign Axel Disasi and Fikayo Tomori, it will be interesting to see who becomes the top centre-back target for the North London outfit.
