Aston Villa have received a boost in their pursuit of Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi as Tottenham have taken a backseat.
Axel Disasi has been linked with a move away from Chelsea since the start of the winter transfer window. While nothing concrete has happened so far, he could still end up parting ways with the Blues on transfer deadline day.
Tottenham and Aston Villa are two Premier League rivals that have been linked with the French centre-back in recent weeks. According to a report from Sky Sports, the North London club have taken a backseat in their pursuit, but Unai Emery’s team remain in talks to sign the Chelsea defender.
After making a name for himself at AS Monaco, Axel Disasi joined the Blues in the summer of 2023. The Frenchman enjoyed an impressive debut campaign as he ended up making a total of 44 appearances across competitions.
While he was a key figure in their first-team last season, things have not been that great for the 26-year-old under Enzo Maresca. He has only featured in 17 matches so far, and only six of those appearances have come in the Premier League.
The Frenchman has been used as a backup right-back option on the majority of the occasions. The lack of game time has frustrated the centre-back and he is pushing for a move away from Stamford Bridge. Tottenham and Aston Villa have been involved in an intense battle to sign Axel Disasi in the last few days.
Aston Villa can win the race for Disasi
Spurs were looking to beat Unai Emery’s team to his signature as they were keen on adding more depth to their squad. Tottenham are going through an injury crisis and signing a centre-back was among their priorities. They have already managed to add Kevin Danso to their squad, and it might be one of the reasons why they have decided to abandon the race for Disasi.
Despite going all out to sign the Chelsea centre-back, Tottenham have ended their pursuit on deadline day. With the North London club taking a back seat, Aston Villa have a clear route to his signature. Having parted ways with Diego Carlos in the ongoing window, Emery’s team do need to bring in a new defender.
Apart from the Brazilian’s departure, Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings are also on the sidelines. As a result, Aston Villa are desperate for a new centre-back, and they remain in talks to sign the Chelsea star on loan on the final day of the transfer window.
