Premier League giants Chelsea are reportedly intensifying their efforts to sign 19-year-old French midfield sensation Mathis Amougou from Ligue 1 club Saint-Etienne.
According to a report by French outlet L’Equipe, Mathis Amougou is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are keen on reinforcing their midfield unit before the winter transfer window shuts down. So, the Saint-Etienne midfield sensation has emerged as a target, with the talks between the two clubs intensifying ahead of Monday’s deadline.
Who is Mathis Amougou?
Mathis Amougou is the latest highly-rated prodigy to rise in prominence in his homeland. A native of Le Blanc-Mesnil, the Frenchman has spent his formative years in his homeland, passing through the academies at Brie Est Entente and US Torcy-Paris Vallée de la Marne before graduating from the youth division at Saint-Etienne.
The 19-year-old broke into the first-team squad at Saint-Etienne midway through the 2023/24 season but has grown in stature this term. Amougou has amassed nearly 1,000 minutes of game time across 17 Ligue 1 appearances.
Meanwhile, the French midfield prospect’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. A move to the Premier League might be on the cards, with Chelsea among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the final hours of the winter transfer window.
London calling?
Chelsea’s interest in Mathis Amougou is understandable. While Enzo Maresca has a stacked midfield unit, the West London club will likely part ways with several midfielders before the winter transfer window shuts down. Carney Chukwuemeka is on the verge of joining Borussia Dortmund on loan until the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
In addition, Cesare Casadei has returned to Italy, with Torino signing him from the West London outfit. In addition, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge. So, several candidates, including Nico O’Reilly, have emerged on Chelsea’s radar, with Amougou also a viable target.
The Blues have ramped up their talks with Saint-Etienne to sign the 19-year-old Frenchman before Monday’s winter transfer deadline. The report has suggested the young midfield sensation will likely move on loan if he joins Chelsea this month. So, it will be interesting to see if Chelsea and Saint-Etienne seal an agreement over a deal for the French wonderkid.
