Carney Chukwuemeka set to join Borussia Dortmund, medical scheduled

Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have reportedly agreed to a loan deal to sign 21-year-old English midfield prospect Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea.

According to a report by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Carney Chukwuemeka has been the subject of interest from Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga giants have secured an agreement to sign the Chelsea midfield prospect on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season. The English whizkid will undergo his medical on Monday before completing his move before the winter transfer deadline.

The Black and Yellows will cover Chukwuemeka’s entire salary, which should be a relief for Chelsea. Meanwhile, an earlier update by Fabrizio Romano revealed that the loan agreement has a purchase option for Borussia Dortmund, and it will be worth more than £40 million, the value of the Englishman’s release clause. In addition, Chelsea will receive a loan fee from Dortmund.

Carney Chukwuemeka and his Chelsea struggles

Carney Chukwuemeka has endured a stop-start career since joining Chelsea from Aston Villa in August 2022. The West London club beat intense competition to sign the 21-year-old midfielder, which suggested a bright future for him at Stamford Bridge. However, fitness issues stunted the youngster’s progress in his debut season at the West London club.

Things have gone from bad to worse under Enzo Maresca, as the English midfielder has managed only 130 minutes of game time across five appearances in all competitions thus far this term. While Maresca is a fan of Chukwuemeka’s talent, regular game time is not on the cards for him. So, the situation piqued the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe, including Borussia Dortmund.

Bundesliga move beckons

Borussia Dortmund’s interest in Carney Chukwuemeka makes sense. The Bundesliga giants have been scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the winter transfer window. While Niko Kovac has multiple midfielders in his squad, a few injuries have forced the Black and Yellows to dip their toes in the market for reinforcement.

So, the forgotten Chelsea prospect has emerged as a viable target for Borussia Dortmund, with the German club securing an agreement to sign him on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season. The Bundesliga giants will cover the 21-year-old Englishman’s entire salary while paying a loan fee to Chelsea.

The Black and Yellows have also secured a purchase option worth more than £40 million, the value of Chukwuemeka’s release clause. The English midfielder will undergo his medical tests on Monday before completing the loan move before the winter transfer deadline.
