Manchester City considering Sergi Altimira swoop, move unlikely

Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing 23-year-old Spanish midfielder Sergi Altimira from La Liga club Real Betis.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Sergi Altimira is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Premier League champions are keen on signing a holding midfielder in the winter transfer window. However, while the Spanish midfielder has emerged as a target, he will soon sign a new contract with La Liga club Real Betis.

Who is Sergi Altimira?

Sergi Altimira has established himself as one of the best young prospects in La Liga since joining Real Betis from Getafe in August 2023. A native of Cardedeu, the Spaniard spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from Barcelona’s fabled La Masia setup.

However, regular game time at the Catalan club eluded the 23-year-old, who rose in prominence during his spell with CE Sabadell before joining Real Betis 18 months ago. Since then, the youngster has come leaps and bounds, turning out nearly 50 times thus far while chipping in with two goals and one assist.

Meanwhile, Altimira’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Recent reports have linked the Spanish midfielder with Crystal Palace, with Manchester City joining the race to secure his services in the winter transfer window.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Manchester City’s interest in Sergi Altimira is understandable. The Premier League champions have been scouring the market for a holding midfielder since losing Rodri to a long-term knee injury. So, several candidates, including Douglas Luiz, have emerged on Manchester City’s radar, with Altimira also emerging as a viable target.

The 23-year-old Spaniard’s progress at Real Betis suggests he can settle down at Manchester City and become the long-term successor to Rodri. However, a deal will unlikely see the light of day anytime soon, as the youngster is on the cusp of signing a new contract with La Liga club Real Betis.

Altimira’s decision to sign a new contract with the Andalusian outfit means Manchester City should scour the market for alternatives. It will be interesting to see who becomes the top target for the Premier League champions.
