Borussia Dortmund rival Juventus in Lloyd Kelly chase

Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have reportedly joined Juventus in the race to secure the services of 26-year-old Newcastle United defender Lloyd Kelly.

According to a report by French outlet L’Equipe, Lloyd Kelly is the subject of interest from Borussia Dortmund. In addition, Juventus and Marseille are keen on signing the Newcastle United defender. The versatile 26-year-old might leave the Tyneside outfit on an initial loan deal before the winter transfer window shuts down.

Lloyd Kelly and his Newcastle United struggles

Lloyd Kelly has seen his progress come to a stuttering halt since joining Newcastle United in a Bosman move in the summer transfer window. The Englishman rose in prominence during his spell with Bournemouth, spending five fruitful seasons with the Premier League club.

However, the 26-year-old has struggled for starts this season, managing only 593 minutes of game time across 13 appearances in all competitions while chipping in with one assist. That has not hampered the former Bournemouth defender’s stock in the market, with several high-profile clubs setting their sights on him.

Newcastle United recently rejected a bid from Fenerbahce while contemplating keeping hold of the English defender beyond the winter transfer window. However, European bigwigs like Juventus and Borussia Dortmund are also vying for the Newcastle United defender’s signature this month.

What next?

Juventus’s interest in Lloyd Kelly makes sense. While the Serie A giants have signed Renato Veiga from Chelsea, they want another centre-back before the winter transfer window shuts down. So, the Newcastle United defender has emerged as the top target for the Bianconeri. However, Juventus will face stiff competition from Borussia Dortmund for the Englishman’s signature.

While newly-appointed Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac has multiple centre-backs in his squad, he wants more options for the second half of the 2024/25 season. In addition, Kelly can play as a left-back, and his versatility means he can be an alternative to Ramy Bensebaini.

Meanwhile, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund face stiff competition from Marseille for the 26-year-old English defender. The report has claimed that a loan departure might be on the cards for the Newcastle United centre-back, and it will be interesting to see where he lands if he leaves the Tyneside outfit in the winter transfer window.
