Atletico Madrid contemplating Robert Lewandowski swoop

Barcelona attacking mainstay Robert Lewandowski has reportedly emerged as a target for Atletico Madrid heading into the summer transfer window.

According to Spanish journalist Ruben Uria, as relayed by Mas que Pelotas, Robert Lewandowski is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros are scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window. And they are closely monitoring the situation of the Polish international at FC Barcelona.

How has Robert Lewandowski fared at Barcelona?

Robert Lewandowski has been a solid performer since joining Barcelona from Bayern Munich in July 2022. The veteran Polish striker rose in prominence during his long stint in the Bundesliga. He first became a household name during his spell with Borussia Dortmund before seeing his stock skyrocket after moving to Bayern Munich in July 2014.

The 35-year-old won every trophy at Bayern Munich, including the treble under the tutelage of Hansi Flick. The experienced attacker also broke numerous records during his illustrious spell at the Allianz Arena. While Lewandowski has not performed at the same level for Barcelona, he has remained prolific in the final third.

The Pole has 24 goals and nine assists in 45 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona thus far this season. However, recent reports have linked Lewandowski with several big-spending and ambitious clubs, although Barcelona might look to hand him a new contract. The veteran striker has now emerged as a target for Atletico Madrid.

Move across La Liga on the cards?

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Robert Lewandowski is surprising. While the Colchoneros are scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window, signing the Barcelona attacker might be a short-sighted move, considering his age profile and declining performance levels.

Nevertheless, the 35-year-old can be a solid short-term solution in the final third for Atletico Madrid. However, amid their links with other high-profile strikers, including Darwin Nunez, signing Lewandowski does not make sense. Meanwhile, the report does not mention if Barcelona will look to cash in on the veteran striker in the summer transfer window.

Recent reports have also linked Atletico Madrid with other Barcelona players, including Ansu Fati and Marcos Alonso. It will be interesting to see if several Blaugrana players join Los Rojiblancos in the coming weeks.
