Atletico Madrid considering summer move for Darwin Nunez

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid will reportedly look to sign 24-year-old Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez from Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Darwin Nunez is the subject of interest from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros are scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window. And they have identified the under-fire 24-year-old Liverpool attacker as a target.

How has Darwin Nunez fared at Liverpool?

Darwin Nunez has blown hot and cold since joining Liverpool from Benfica in July 2022. The Uruguayan international, who has turned out 22 times for La Celeste, was among the most highly sought-after attackers two years ago after an exceptional 2021/22 campaign with Benfica.

However, the 24-year-old has struggled to hit the heights of his farewell campaign with Benfica since joining Liverpool. That is not to say that Nunez has been horrendous, as he has amassed 18 goals and 13 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions thus far this season. However, the player has come under fire for his profligacy in front of the goal.

Nunez has one of the worst conversion rates in the Premier League, which has attracted criticism from different quarters. However, the Liverpool striker’s stock remains high in the market, with a few La Liga giants keen on signing him in the summer transfer window. And his next destination might be Atletico Madrid.

La Liga move on the horizon?

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Darwin Nunez is understandable. Los Rojiblancos will likely delve into the market for a striker in the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Angel Correa. In addition, Alvaro Morata is on the wrong side of 30.

So, it behoves Atletico Madrid to invest in a prolific striker in the summer transfer window. Several candidates, including Gabriel Jesus, have thus emerged on the Colchoneros’ radar in the last few weeks. However, Nunez is also a viable target, even though he has blown hot and cold for Liverpool.

Reports this week have suggested that the 24-year-old might not be at Anfield beyond the summer transfer window after some recent developments. Meanwhile, with a move to Barcelona reportedly unlikely to see the light of day, Atletico Madrid might have a clear run at the under-fire Liverpool attacker.
