Tottenham will make decision on Timo Werner at the end of the season, permanent move unlikely

Tottenham are set to decide on the future of Timo Werner when the campaign ends, and it may not look suitable for the German.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham will decide on Timo Werner in the summer, with the club set to take a closer look at whether they want him here permanently. Spurs want younger options than the 28-year-old, which could spell doom for the German international.

Tottenham to move away from Timo Werner?

In January, Spurs took full advantage of the transfer window when fellow rivals restricted their activities due to the PSR obligations. They brought in defender Radu Dragusin and attacker Timo Werner, with the latter arriving on a short loan with a reported purchase option inserted in that deal.

At first, it seemed like a good deal to sign the 28-year-old Champions League winner. But as time has progressed, he has produced underwhelming performances. Two goals and three assists in 14 appearances may not bode well with Tottenham, who had considered extending Werner’s stay at the club beyond this season.

Tottenham were widely expected to decide on the German international’s future in the summer. Now, they are leaning more towards letting him go rather than open negotiations with RB Leipzig, as the report states Spurs can sign him for a modest fee should they take up the purchase option.

The suggestion is that Tottenham are adopting a policy to sign younger players, possibly under 24. So, the former Chelsea attacker might not fit in the scheme of things at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Hence, they may likely move away from this deal and bring in a different option in the summer.

Tottenham’s attacking targets for the summer

If Tottenham let go of Werner, they will likely strengthen the left-hand side and, in general, might target a versatile forward. Kevin Denkey is a target and might fit into their policy of recruiting young players, while there are heavy links to Genoa’s Albert Gudmundsson.

There are also strong links to Eberechi Eze, and he might fit the role Werner has taken up on the left-hand side. Hence, it is clear that Tottenham have many players that fit their age criteria on their list, and this may not look good for the 28-year-old Champions League winner, who might have hoped he could get the chance to prolong his career here in North London.
