Thiago Silva and Chelsea have confirmed that they will end their association of four years after the 2023/24 season culminates.

In an official statement on Chelsea’s website, the Blues have confirmed the impending departure of Thiago Silva. The Brazilian defender will leave the West London club as a free agent in the summer transfer window after spending four years with them.

Silva said in the announcement video, “Chelsea means a lot to me. I came here with the intention of only staying for a year and it ended up being four years. Not just for me but for my family, too. My sons play for Chelsea so it’s a source of great pride to be a part of the Chelsea family – literally because my sons are here.”

“I hope they can continue their careers here at this victorious club that many players wish to be part of. I think in everything I did here over the four years, I always gave my all. But, unfortunately, everything has a start, a middle and an end. That doesn’t mean that this is a definitive end.”

“I hope to leave the door open so that in the near future I can return, albeit in another role here. But…it’s an indescribable love. I can only say thank you. It is already hard saying goodbye in the most normal of circumstances but when there is a mutual love, it’s even harder. But once a Blue, always a Blue.”

Thiago Silva is one of the greatest defenders of his generation, having enjoyed success with every club he has represented. The 39-year-old has won eight league titles in his career while lifting 20 other trophies, including the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea.

The former Brazilian international joined Chelsea on a free transfer in August 2020 after leaving Paris Saint-Germain upon the expiration of his contract. The veteran defender has turned out over 150 times for Chelsea, chipping in with nine goals and three assists. However, his spell with the West London club will end in the summer transfer window.

Widespread reports had already that Chelsea would not offer Thiago Silva a new deal before the expiration of his contract. And his next destination might be Fluminense, with several outlets linking the Brazilian club with the 39-year-old. It will be interesting to see if a deal materialises.
