Chelsea defender Thiago Silva will leave the West London club as a free agent in the summer transfer window.

A report from GOAL Brasil has claimed that Chelsea veteran Thiago Silva will move on when his contract expires. The experienced defender has decided to join his former club Fluminense on a free transfer.

Silva was recently linked with a move to Saudi Arabia as well. He is one of the most decorated defenders of the modern generation, with 31 trophies to his name. The veteran should prove to be a superb addition to Fluminense. Although he is in the twilight years of his career, Silva will add winning experience and leadership qualities to the dressing room, apart from his qualities as a footballer.

Chelsea will certainly miss his leadership qualities in the dressing room next season. With that said, the Blues need to move on as well and bring in quality young players. Silva is no longer at his peak, and Chelsea will have to plan for the future.

Chelsea need to sign a quality defender

The Blues have looked quite vulnerable defensively this season, despite signing a number of defenders in recent seasons. It will be interesting to see if they can tighten up at the back and bounce back strongly next term.

It has been a disappointing season for them, and they are likely to miss out on European qualification once again. A club of their stature should be fighting towards the top of the table and pushing for trophies every year. Chelsea finished in the mid-table positions last year, and they are likely to end up in a similar place this season as well.

It will be interesting to see if the club hierarchy are willing to persist with Mauricio Pochettino as their manager next season. The Argentine manager has shown his quality at other clubs, but he has not been able to get the best out of his Chelsea squad so far.

Losing one of the leaders of the dressing room will certainly come as a blow for the Blues, and they must look to dip into the transfer market for proper replacements in the summer. Meanwhile, Thiago Silva has proven himself at top clubs in multiple leagues throughout his career, and he will look to end his exceptional journey at former club Fluminense now.
