La Liga champions Barcelona have handed a trial to 17-year-old Ghanaian left-back David Oduro after his tryout with Chelsea.

According to a report by Spanish outlet SPORT, David Oduro is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions have handed a trial to the 17-year-old left-back, who has drawn comparisons with Alphonso Davies, with Chelsea also having a tryout with him recently.

Who is David Oduro?

David Oduro has spent his formative years in his homeland, rising through the ranks at Accra Lions. He graduated from the Ghanaian club’s youth division in 2022 and has established a foothold in the first-team squad in the last 18 months. In addition, he is playing beyond his age group on the international stage.

The 17-year-old turns out for Ghana’s under-20 side, turning out five times thus far. Meanwhile, he has been a regular for Accra Lions’ first team this season, making 15 appearances while scoring once. Oduro’s progress at the Ghanaian club has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Chelsea and Barcelona.

Barcelona, Chelsea Vying for Oduro

Chelsea recently took the teenage sensation on trial. And the Blues remain interested in him amid their search for a left-back. While Oduro will unlikely become a fixture in the Chelsea first team, he can be a long-term solution amid Ben Chilwell’s fitness issues.

Interestingly, David Oduro has drawn comparisons with Alphonso Davies, who features on Chelsea’s radar but will likely join Real Madrid this summer. But Chelsea will face stiff competition from Barcelona in the race to sign the 17-year-old Ghanaian wonderkid, with the Blaugrana handing a trial to him.

The reigning La Liga champions have scoured the African market in the last 12 months, with recent reports linking them with Ibrahim Diarra. Meanwhile, Barcelona might delve into the market for a left-back amid uncertainties surrounding the future of Marcos Alonso. So, Oduro can be a long-term competitor for Alejandro Balde for the left-back spot.

It will be interesting to see how Oduro fares in his Barcelona trial. With Chelsea also handing him a tryout, a move to a high-profile club might soon be on the cards for the 17-year-old Ghanaian wonderkid.
