Manchester United will reportedly look to take advantage of Inter Milan’s precarious financial situation to sign Lautaro Martinez this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Lautaro Martinez is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a striker ahead of the summer transfer window. And they have set their sights on the Argentine international.

The Rise and Rise of Lautaro Martinez

Lautaro Martinez has established himself as one of the best strikers in the world since joining Inter Milan from Racing Club in July 2018. The 28-year-old took some time to get going at San Siro but has not looked back since becoming an undisputed first-choice player, going from strength to strength.

The Argentine international has succeeded Samir Handanovic as the Inter Milan captain this season. And he has thrived with the added responsibility, amassing 22 goals and five assists in 30 appearances thus far this term. But Martinez’s long-term future at Inter Milan is uncertain due to the club’s financial duress.

The Serie A giants might have to sell their most prized assets to balance their books in the summer transfer window. But Lautaro Martinez is ready to sign a new contract with Inter Milan if the situation deems it possible. Meanwhile, Inter’s financial mess has not gone unnoticed, with many high-profile clubs, including Manchester United, setting their sights on Martinez.

Manchester United Want Lautaro Martinez

Manchester United’s interest in the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner is somewhat perplexing, with Rasmus Hojlund finally settling down at Old Trafford. But Anthony Martial has entered the final months of his contract and will likely leave Manchester United as a free agent in the summer transfer window.

So, the Red Devils must enter the market for a striker ahead of the 2024/25 season. But while Lautaro Martinez will bolster the Manchester United attack, he will likely usurp Hojlund as the first-choice striker, making the interest surprising. Instead, signing someone like Callum Wilson will be wise to retain Hojlund in his role.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if the Premier League heavyweights sign Martinez in the summer transfer window. But a move will unlikely materialise if Inter Milan can balance the books by offloading other high-value assets instead of selling the club captain.
