Manchester United are reportedly interested in landing Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson in the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Newcastle striker Callum Wilson is reportedly tempting Manchester United as a potential summer option to fix their striker woes.
January proved to be a quiet month for Manchester United once again, with Erik ten Hag’s side busy on the pitch on deadline day but quiet in the transfer market in its final throes.
Back in December, football director John Murtough stated that the club did not consider the winter window an opportunity to conduct substantial business. Even so, some may have hoped for a last-minute surprise, similar to the loan move for Marcel Sabitzer a year ago.
It wasn’t to be, though, and the last month has been all about outgoings for United. More than a dozen players have moved on, either on loan or permanently, with Isak Hansen-Aaroen’s late departure underlining where the club’s priorities lay.
Erik ten Hag admitted Financial Fair Play and the Premier League’s PSR concerns stood in the way of United adding another striker in January. Anthony Martial’s injury saw the club explore what might be possible, and the Frenchman could well leave in the summer to leave a gap.
There are several candidates to fill that gap, and Newcastle’s veteran striker, Callum Wilson, is among them. The Red Devils’ were reportedly among a number of Premier League clubs to have been “alerted” to Wilson’s availability for just £18 million in the final week of the January transfer window.
Newcastle were desperate to raise funds to stay in line with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, with Wilson deemed a potential sellable asset. However, Manchester United lacked wiggle room to finance a deal.
Wilson has been on the books at Newcastle since 2020. The 31-year-old is an important player in Eddie Howe’s side and has racked up 216 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career, scoring an impressive 86 goals and providing 23 assists in the process.
The striker has scored seven goals and given one assist in seven starts and eight substitute appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle so far this season. Having said that, the England international striker has had injury problems during his time at St. James’ Park, which is part of the reason the Magpies’ could look to offload him in the summer.
At 31 years old, Wilson offers a proven track record of goals in the Premier League and could also provide valuable balance to United’s youthful forward line. Although he is not a long-term option, his goalscoring ability makes him attractive to Manchester United as a backup option to sensational Rasmus Hojlund.
