Real Madrid will reportedly track the performances of 24-year-old Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba at the Africa Cup of Nations.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Edmond Tapsoba is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. Los Blancos will sanction a scouting mission at the Africa Cup of Nations, with the 24-year-old Bayer Leverkusen one of the players the talent-spotters will watch in the month-long extravaganza.

Who is Edmond Tapsoba?

Edmond Tapsoba has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Vitoria Guimaraes in January 2020. The Burkina Faso international spent his formative years in his homeland before moving to Portugal in his first foray in Europe.

But the stint with Bayer Leverkusen has helped him rise in prominence in the last four years. A mainstay at the back for the Bundesliga club, the 24-year-old has turned out 22 times thus far this season, playing a leading role in Xabi Alonso’s men rising to the summit of the German top flight.

Meanwhile, the player’s progress at Bayer Leverkusen has not gone unnoticed. Several Premier League bigwigs, including Chelsea, are showing interest in Edmond Tapsoba. But the latest report by Fichajes has revealed that he has emerged as a target for Real Madrid, which might change the equation.

Spain Calling?

Real Madrid’s interest in Tapsoba is hardly surprising, considering the Merengues are in the market for a centre-back. Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, and Nacho are on the wrong side of 30. In addition, Nacho might not be at Real Madrid beyond this season after entering the final six months of his contract.

Meanwhile, Alaba will return to action after recovering from a long-term knee injury. So, it behoves Real Madrid to invest in a centre-back. Several candidates, including Ousmane Diomande, have thus emerged on their radar. But Edmond Tapsoba is also a viable target for Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants will closely monitor the 24-year-old in action for Burkina Faso during the Africa Cup of Nations. Diomande will also be the subject of the scouting mission. And it will be interesting to see if either centre-back becomes a top target for Real Madrid this summer.
