Newcastle United open talks to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan next month

Newcastle United have opened talks to sign Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City in January, with the midfielder keen.

According to Team Talk, Newcastle United are ready to step up their efforts to sign Kalvin Phillips after opening talks for the midfielder. Eddie Howe remains intent on bringing reinforcements, with the 28-year-old Premier League star from Manchester City a key target.

Newcastle United are keen on landing a quality midfielder in January to shore up the options in the position. Bruno Guimaraes has operated alone in the holding midfield role, with Eddie Howe keen on adding something different there, and have identified Kalvin Phillips as a potential target.

Newcastle United’s interest goes back a few months when it became clear that Pep Guardiola does not rate the 28-year-old Premier League star. Despite the negligible playing time at Manchester City, Phillips remains an important player in the league and for England manager Gareth Southgate.

He fears for his chances to feature for England in the Euros if he keeps spending more time on the bench. Pep Guardiola recently admitted guilt at constantly ignoring the 28-year-old from his plans, and Phillips remains intent on finding an external solution to play regularly.

A transfer away from Manchester City looks the most likely outcome, with Guardiola open to letting him leave. Newcastle United had stepped up their interest despite knowing there were other clubs in the mix, including Juventus, who had approached his entourage with an enquiry.

Phillips would prefer to stay in England and prioritise a move to Newcastle United in January. The Magpies have reportedly opened talks with Manchester City over a potential loan move in the next month. They are threading over FFP concerns that could prevent the club from spending big in the next window.

As per a report, Tottenham are also in the race and were considered leaders in the hunt ahead of Chelsea and Liverpool. However, Newcastle United could make headway in the chase and bring the 28-year-old Premier League star to St James Park.

Manchester City would prefer a buy option for the 28-year-old, although their final asking price remains under wraps. Newcastle United will certainly have the money to make this signing permanent, especially if Phillips signs in the second part of the campaign.
