Barcelona will reportedly compete with Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign 26-year-old Spanish midfielder Brais Mendez from Real Sociedad.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Brais Mendez is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are scouring the market for versatile midfielders this season. But they will face stiff competition from Tottenham Hotspur for the 26-year-old Real Sociedad midfielder.

Brais Mendez has established himself as one of the most underrated midfielders in La Liga in the last few years. A former trainee at Villarreal, he spent most of his formative years at UD Santa Marina. But the Spaniard rose to prominence during his stint with Celta Vigo, where he became a professional footballer.

The 26-year-old has taken his performances up several levels since joining Real Sociedad from Celta Vigo last year. Mendez has been a mainstay in the middle of the park for La Real and started the 2023/24 campaign well. He has contributed to ten goals in 15 appearances, finding the back of the net five times while providing five assists.

Mendez’s progress at Real Sociedad has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs. Recent reports have linked the Spanish international with Tottenham Hotspur. But the Premier League heavyweights now face stiff competition from reigning La Liga champions Barcelona.

Barcelona bolstered the midfield unit this past summer by signing Ilkay Gundogan and Oriol Romeu. But with both players being on the wrong side of 30, they will be short-term solutions in the middle of the park. So, it behoves Barcelona to scour the market for a midfielder, with Brais Mendez emerging as a viable target.

As for Tottenham, with James Maddison picking up an injury against Chelsea on Monday, the issue of squad depth in Ange Postecoglou’s has become clear. Considering Mendez can also play as a box-to-box midfielder, he should coexist with Maddison in the Tottenham midfield. So, the 26-year-old Spaniard is an option worth considering for the North London club.

But Barcelona’s entry into the equation complicates matters for Tottenham. But the Spanish international’s contract with Real Sociedad will expire in June 2028, meaning La Real will likely demand a premium to part ways with him. That might create an issue for Barcelona while bringing Tottenham back into the fray.
