Barcelona and Liverpool have reportedly contacted the entourage of 21-year-old Spanish international Nico Williams.

According to Estadio Deportivo, Barcelona and Liverpool are interested in Nico Williams. The Reds have already asked about the Spanish international, whose contract has a release clause worth €50 million. Meanwhile, a report by SPORT has suggested that the reigning La Liga giants have contacted Felix Tainta, Williams’s representative.

Nico Williams is the younger brother of ever-present Athletic Club attacker Inaki Williams. But unlike his brother, who represents Ghana, the 21-year-old has chosen to turn out for Spain. Meanwhile, he has established himself as a regular for Athletic Club and La Roja in the last 12 months.

One of the best young attackers in his homeland, the Spanish international has seen his stock rise. And Williams has started the 2023/24 season strongly, providing four assists in as many games thus far. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of high-profile clubs like Barcelona and Liverpool.

The player has been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time. And the uncertainties surrounding the future of Mohamed Salah might compel the Reds to strengthen their interest. In addition, with Williams having a release clause of just €50 million, Liverpool should be able to afford him.

The versatile Spanish international can also be an option for the left flank, considering he is right-footed. So, the 21-year-old is an attractive target for Liverpool heading into the two transfer windows in 2024. But they face stiff competition from Barcelona in the race to sign the Athletic Club prospect.

Like Liverpool, the Catalan giants have also monitored Williams’s progress for a long time. And with Ansu Fati’s long-term future at the club being uncertain, Barcelona should scour the market for a wide attacker despite the advent of Lamine Yamal. A report by SPORT has now revealed that they have contacted Felix Tainta, his agent.

The Premier League heavyweights have also asked about Williams, whose release clause of €50 million makes him an approachable target. But Athletic Club will look to tie the Spanish international to a new contract with a higher exit clause. So, it will be interesting to see if Barcelona or Liverpool can prise him away from San Mames.
