Chelsea have sights on RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, who only arrived in Germany during the summer, but there are other targets too.
According to Give Me Sport, Chelsea could target Benjamin Sesko in January as part of their striker search. Todd Boehly wants a new frontman with a different profile to Nicolas Jackson, with the RB Leipzig man one of the three striker targets mentioned in the report.
If we look closely at the free-spending Chelsea project, it is centered around young players below a specific age group. The club have spent rather too much on such stars and have tried to build a squad capable of challenging for the future.
Part of the thinking with the specified age group ensured they did not sign anyone over 25. But whether that extends to their striker search remains the question. Chelsea are already considering a new frontman ahead of the January window.
Nicolas Jackson arrived as the only striker during the summer, although Christopher Nkunku also tried out in the No.9 position during pre-season. With the Frenchman injured for the next few months and Jackson having performed decently so far, Chelsea still needs a different profile of forward.
As per the report, they have three notable names in mind. They could look to sign Ivan Toney on priority, but the Brentford striker’s potential £80 million price tag may prove an obstacle. While Chelsea have shown enough financial muscle to afford that price, Toney is 27 and may not fit with their current transfer policy.
The second one on the list is Ollie Watkins, with a similar £70 million price tag plus his age outside of Chelsea’s policy. Chelsea retain an interest in the striker, but Aston Villa may show reluctance to let him leave mid-season, and they are already planning to start talks over a contract extension.
The last player who would tick every box for Chelsea is Benjamin Sesko. The report claims the Blues are hot on the trails of the 20-year-old striker, who only joined Bundesliga club RB Leipzig during the summer. Sesko has started the season brightly enough, scoring in his two substitute appearances.
His stature within the side continues to grow with each passing day, and soon enough, he will become Leipzig’s starting striker. The 20-year-old Bundesliga striker may prove a difficult target for the Blues, considering Leipzig will show reluctance to sell him so soon. Real Madrid are also keen on the striker for next season, but other big clubs could keep following the forward’s progress.
Yet, a large offer to tempt Leipzig could arrive during the January window, but the German side may not entertain approaches for the 20-year-old Bundesliga striker. Chelsea may have to look elsewhere, as potentially all three of their main striker targets may not move clubs during mid-season, especially Sesko.
