Aston Villa and Barcelona are reportedly negotiating a deal for out-of-favour 28-year-old French defender Clement Lenglet before Friday’s deadline.

According to Gerard Romero on Jijantes FC, Clement Lenglet is the subject of interest from Aston Villa. The Villans are deep in talks with Barcelona for the out-of-favour defender. The Spanish journalist has suggested that the two clubs have an agreement on the conditions, although it is unclear if the deal will be a loan or a permanent transfer.

Clement Lenglet will be desperate to sort out his future, with less than 100 hours remaining for the summer transfer window to shut down. The French centre-back has struggled to find his next destination due to issues out of his control. And he had an agreement in principle to join Tottenham Hotspur in a permanent deal.

But the North London club failed to find a common ground with Barcelona over transfer fees. And with the two clubs failing to secure an agreement, Tottenham will likely move on from Lenglet. Meanwhile, a move to Saudi Arabia appeared on the horizon for the out-of-favour 28-year-old Barcelona defender.

Real Betis and Lenglet’s former club, Sevilla, also showed interest in the Frenchman. But there has been little progress on those fronts, leaving the player in limbo. So, uncertainty is mounting over his next destination. However, Aston Villa might finally provide him the escape route from Barcelona.

The Villans have lost Tyrone Mings for most of the 2023/24 season after the English international picked up a long-term knee injury. In addition, recent reports have linked Diego Carlos with a move away from Villa Park. So it behoves Aston Villa to invest in a centre-back before the summer transfer window shuts down.

Lenglet has thus emerged as a viable target for Aston Villa. In addition, the Frenchman’s previous experience in the Premier League with Tottenham should keep him in good stead at Villa Park. And the Villans are negotiating a deal with Barcelona for the out-of-favour 28-year-old centre-back. Gerard Romero has added that the two clubs have an agreement on “the conditions of the deal”.

But it is unclear if Lenglet will join Sevilla in a permanent deal or return to the Premier League on another loan arrangement. With just two more days left for the summer transfer window to close, time is running out for the out-of-favour Barcelona defender to find his next destination, with Aston Villa his likeliest landing spot.
