Marcos Acuna closing in on joining Aston Villa

Marcos Acuna is reportedly “one step away” from joining Aston Villa, who will sanction Lucas Digne’s exit after signing the Sevilla defender.

According to Italian journalist Rudy Galetti, Marcos Acuna is on the verge of joining Aston Villa from Sevilla in the ongoing transfer window. The World Cup winner is “one step away” from completing the move to Villa Park. And the Midlands club will sanction the sale of Lucas Digne after landing the 31-year-old Sevilla defender.

Marcos Acuna has made considerable progress since joining Sevilla from Sporting CP in September 2020. The Argentine international’s stock rose during his stint in Portugal. But his stature has soared following the move to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium three years ago.

The 31-year-old has turned out 125 times thus far for Aston Villa, chipping in with five goals and 13 assists. Meanwhile, Acuna was a regular for Argentina as they lifted the World Cup in Qatar last year. But the player’s future at the club level is uncertain, with Aston Villa looking to secure his services this summer.

Acuna has been on Aston Villa’s radar for a long time. But a move has not looked anywhere close to materialising until the ongoing transfer window. And the Villans have been keen on landing the experienced full-back despite signing another La Liga-based left-back in January.

Aston Villa signed Alex Moreno from Real Betis in the winter transfer window. But the Spaniard has not been able to stamp his authority thus far at Villa Park. Meanwhile, Lucas Digne faces an uncertain future at the Midlands club this summer. And Al Hilal will look to prise him away from Aston Villa in the coming days.

Al Hilal’s prospects should now improve, with Acuna “one step away” from joining Aston Villa. The latest update comes in the wake of suggestions that Villa failed with a bid for the 31-year-old World Cup winner. But an agreement between them and Sevilla seems close.

While Rudy Galetti has not provided details of a possible transfer fee, other outlets have also suggested the proximity of an agreement. So it will be interesting to see if the 31-year-old Argentine international bolsters the Aston Villa squad this summer.
