Chelsea are reportedly still confident about signing Brazilian whizkid Deivid Washington from Santos despite speculation of a potential hijack from French side AS Monaco.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are confident of sealing the deal to land Santos wonderkid Deivid Washington despite late interest from French outfit AS Monaco.

Fabrizio Romano first broke the news about Chelsea being on the verge of signing another Brazilian youngster in Deivid Washington yesterday. The Blues reportedly agreed personal terms over a €20 million switch from Santos, with the 18-year-old expected to be instantly loaned out to Strasbourg.

The “imminent” deal advanced to the point that Chelsea would have been booking a medical. However, in a sensational transfer u-turn on the same day, Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna came out with reports that AS Monaco are trying to make an audacious 11th-hour attempt to hijack Chelsea’s move for the Santos’ winger.

Aouna added that Monaco “jumped” into the negotiations just before the deal was signed. And despite agreeing to a lucrative move to Chelsea, the youngster’s camp is open to backtracking as he apparently favours a move to Monaco, with crunch transfer talks entering a crucial stage.

Romano has now provided the latest update on the situation, claiming the Blues “remain confident” of completing the operation next week. The West Londoners believe their offer is more than AS Monaco’s proposal and has better payment terms, with “the green light from Santos” imminent.

Moreover, the youngster wishes to join Chelsea and will turn down approaches from any other suitors in favour of a Stamford Bridge switch. The Blues’ project has been centred around signing promising young talent on long-term contracts, with no fewer than seven players joining the first team so far this summer, including Santos attacker Angelo, who joined for a €15 million fee.

They now look set to raid the Brazilian club once again. But this time for an 18-year-old who only broke into Santos’ first team this year. His first senior goal arrived in a 3-0 home win over Bahia in the Brazilian top-flight on May 10 this year. He has scored two goals in nine Serie A matches for the Brazilian Serie A club so far this term.
