Sunderland have held talks with Manchester United for 23-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Bishop, with a move on the cards.

According to Daily Mail, Manchester United could sell 23-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Bishop to Sunderland. The Englishman, who has never played a senior game for the Red Devils, could join the Championship side, who are keen to bolster their squad in the close season.

Nathan Bishop could end his time at Manchester United three and a half years after joining from Southend United. He was then pencilled to make an impact and possibly break into the first team in some capacity. Neither happened, as the 23-year-old goalkeeper will likely leave the club without making a first-team appearance.

Bishop has forged a reputation in the lower tiers of the EFL and played a prominent role for League Two side Mansfield in 2021/22. He helped them to the Play-off Final before Port Vale beat them. He returned to Manchester United last season and featured nine times for the U21 side.

With a contract expiring in 2024, the 23-year-old goalkeeper has no future at Old Trafford, and the club will look at selling him. As per Transfermarkt, his value is around 250,000, which entices a few teams from the lower divisions.

Sunderland are keen on the keeper, as they want to bolster their squad after narrowly missing out on promotion last season. For Bishop, it will be a brilliant opportunity to resurrect his career and experience the Championship.

The Black Cats are already in discussions with Manchester United to transfer Bishop. The two sides could reach a swift agreement without any late twists in the chase. Meanwhile, the Red Devils are keen to bolster their goalkeeping area after the arrival of Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

Manchester United lack depth in the position after the departure of David de Gea, while Tom Heaton also has interest from elsewhere. The latter had reportedly agreed on a loan move somewhere before Erik ten Hag blocked the transfer following de Gea’s departure.

Heaton has since featured heavily during their pre-season tour of the US. Meanwhile, Japanese youngster Zion Suzuki seems close to joining Manchester United, with talks underway with Urawa Reds. There are question marks over the 20-year-old becoming the club’s second choice, although he might join the Under-21 side.

As for Bishop, he has no future at Old Trafford and might as well move on to resurrect his career. Sunderland could help him provide the right exposure, but there are doubts about whether the 23-year-old would become their first choice between the sticks owing to a lack of experience.
