Manchester United have opened talks over personal terms with Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, with the club keen to sign the 20-year-old.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have opened talks with Zion Suzuki and his camp over personal terms. The Urawa Reds goalkeeper is one of the options Erik ten Hag’s side want as backup to main goalkeeping arrival Andre Onana.

Manchester United had a problem in their goalkeeping department as they entered the transfer market. The departure of David de Gea compounded their search for a new custodian, as the Spaniard was expected to remain at the club.

The debacle that went about in the background due to Manchester United’s mishandling of the De Gea situation has led them to look for a new No.1. They are very close to signing Andre Onana in a huge deal from Inter Milan.

The saga has rumbled for weeks, and Manchester United may appear finally close to sealing the move for their top target, albeit by paying a large sum. Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag would also like to bring in a deputy for the Cameroonian, as Tom Heaton and Dean Henderson are also expected to leave.

Heaton had long agreed to a move away. But ten Hag blocked it, and the Englishman remained with the club for pre-season. Meanwhile, Henderson could join Nottingham Forest, with Steve Cooper keen to sign him permanently. Now, Manchester United are looking at a new option, as links to a Japanese star keep growing.

Manchester United are interested in 20-year-old Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. The Japanese international, who plays for Urawa Reds, is reportedly keen on the new adventure and making his entry into top-tier European football.

Manchester United will lodge an offer to sign the keeper. But that may happen once they seal the Onana transfer. For now, they are talking with Suzuki and his camp over personal terms, but the 20-year-old is one of the options Ten Hag is considering.

Yet, considering the talk about the 20-year-old, he may seem like the favourite to deputise Onana in the coming season. Suzuki has little experience but is highly rated in Japan and may come good in the next few years.

Manchester United hope to close the goalkeeping chapter soon and then focus on bringing in a new striker. Ten Hag would also love to add a new central midfielder and a defender, but those moves will depend on the finances the manager has at his disposal.
