Barcelona will soon complete a part-exchange deal to sign cultured Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu from Girona this summer.

According to Nil Sola, Oriol Romeu is on the verge of joining Barcelona. The Blaugrana will pay a base fee of €5 million to secure the services of the cultured Spanish midfielder. In addition, the deal will include add-ons. And Pablo Torre will join Girona on loan as part of the part-exchange agreement.

Oriol Romeu has found a second wind since joining Girona from Southampton last summer. The 31-year-old saw his future being uncertain at the end of the 2021/22 season. But he established himself as one of the most hard-working midfielders in La Liga following his debut campaign with Girona.

The cultured Spanish midfielder has made 34 appearances thus far for Girona while chipping in with two goals. And Romeu’s performances have captured the attention of his former club Barcelona. The latest update suggests he is on the verge of rejoining the reigning La Liga champions this summer.

Barcelona identified the Spaniard as a target after realising that Martin Zubimendi and Joshua Kimmich were too expensive for them. The two midfielders were the top targets for Xavi Hernandez. But the two midfielders were beyond Barcelona’s budget for the summer transfer window.

The Girona midfielder thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, considering he did not have a high price tag. The 31-year-old soon became the top candidate to bolster the Barcelona midfield this summer. And a deal always seemed to be on the cards, as the player was keen on joining the Blaugrana.

Romeu’s desire to join Barcelona forced Girona’s hand, even though the White and Reds were initially reluctant to sanction a deal. They were also unimpressed by Barcelona’s antics while pursuing Romeu’s signature. And the Catalan giants are now on the verge of sealing a deal worth €5 million to land him.

The agreement for the cultured Spanish midfielder will also include add-ons. In addition, Pablo Torre will join Girona on loan for the 2023/24 season. While Girona initially wanted Nico Gonzalez as part of the deal, Barcelona made Torre available. As for Romeu, it will be interesting to see if his second stint at Camp Nou works out well for him.
