Barcelona might ponder re-signing 31-year-old Girona midfielder Oriol Romeu to succeed Sergio Busquets in the summer transfer window.

According to Nil Sola on Jijantes FC, Oriol Romeu is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are in the market for a long-term successor to Sergio Busquets heading into the summer transfer window. And the 31-year-old Girona midfielder has emerged as a target.

Oriol Romeu is a native of Catalonia and started his youth career at CF Ulldecona. And after half a decade at his hometown club, he spent a few years at Espanyol before joining Barcelona. But the Spaniard could not establish a foothold in Barcelona’s first-team setup after graduating from La Masia. And he rose to prominence after moving to England.

While the stint with Chelsea was not memorable, the 31-year-old became a household name after moving to Southampton. And the experienced midfielder returned to Spain, joining Girona last summer. He has turned out 34 times across all competitions, chipping in with two goals. But Romeu’s spell with the Catalan club might end this year, with Barcelona considering re-signing him.

Barcelona will lose Sergio Busquets in the summer transfer window, ending his long run at the club. And the veteran midfielder’s departure will leave a gaping hole in the Barcelona midfield unit. So it behoves the Blaugrana to scour the market for a successor to Busquets. And several midfielders, including Martin Zubimendi, are on their radar.

But Zubimendi will be an expensive acquisition, with Real Sociedad demanding €60 million to part ways with him. And recent reports have claimed that intermediaries have offered N’Golo Kante to Barcelona. But Romeu can also be an economical solution to Barcelona’s midfield issues next term.

Nil Sola has claimed that Romeu’s continuity at Girona FC is not a guarantee. And if the 31-year-old former La Masia ace leaves Girona, staying in Catalonia might be an option. But he might not be the first-choice midfielder, with Frenkie de Jong likely to fill Busquets’s void in that case.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if the 31-year-old Spanish midfielder can seal a dream return to Barcelona this summer. For now, he is one of several options to replace Busquets when the veteran midfielder calls it a day at Spotify Camp Nou.
